Do you carry a knife? I mean, I'm not talking about a Swiss Army type knife, although I like those. I'm referring to something larger. I think I'd like to start carrying one. Just cuz - hopefully I'd never have to use it for anything other than utilitarian purposes.

I'd carry a gun, but I live in a state that doesn't recognize my Constitutional right to do such a thing.

Not sure how you'd know that.

I carry a knife everywhere. It's a great tool.

I often carry this one or close enough. It has a built in clip, which makes it easy to clip to a belt or a pants pocket with the knife inside.

I carry a leatherman expanse e33t. Leatherman knives: e33T/e33Tx

Blade, screwdrivers, bottle opener. Nothing too gimicky and still relatively compact to carry.

No. There is no need, and, personally, if you live in an urban area, don't need one for work purposes, and just feel that you'd like to carry a gun or knife because it makes you feel good, then you should probably:

1) Move your dumb ass to a nice neighbourhood;
2) Get a job doing legal shit; or
3) Stop being a loser with narcissistic heroic dreams.

That's my take.

Given the apparent skill of most in the retail legal profession, #2 is probably easy enough.

But another member said it earlier -- knives are tools as well. I use mine routinely to open boxes or packaging and to cut up snacks or foods if I'm out at a park or in the woods without proper utensils.

Those flashy knives seem marketed to those who want to show off their knife-lifestyle. I'd rather carry a sharpened toothbrush.

When I had a job where I was often opening boxes, I always had a knife on me. Since then, I've rarely had need of a knife when one wasn't available where I was.

If you carry a knife, either its a tool or you are.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I've been carrying one that was given to me by a friend for a month now, and I'm constantly using it for a variety of everyday purposes. Knives are just another tool that have been misused by violent types for as long as they've existed, but they're incredibly useful.

Only when I travel out in the back country. Never felt the need in the city.

I always have a knife in my car, but more for practical purposes rather than defense. Unless I'm in an epic car chase where I'm required to hang out my window while driving and knife a baddie.

Even if I wanted to carry a gun, I feel that there are good reasons to carry a knife over a gun on your persons besides simply self-defense. A gun is pretty much a single-use tool, but a knife can come in handy in a variety of situations.

Why do we never see zombie apocalypse heros riding a bicycle? Or a horse? Or anything that doesn't require gallons of petrol to do over 70?

Swiss-Army guy myself - French law says that you can carry a knife with a blade shorter or equal to the breadth of your hand. Loads of people carry knives in France, dunno if knive crime is any higher than elsewhere.

Wake me up when a movie depicts some dude cutting his way through the undead hordes with his trusty belt knife.

I agree 100%. I've worked at many construction/labour jobs and a knife was an essential tool that you had to use hourly - I'd go through utility blades on a biweekly basis. But if you wear a knife and you use it no more than once a day, you're a tool. Put one in your desk/car/whevever and go get it when you need it, just like you do with a pair of scissors. You never see someone wearing scissors on their belt, right?

Having said all that, I've got an original D.H. Russell belt knife and what I consider to be a fine collection of beautiful Japanese cooking knives. Yep...those are all tools.

It's cultural. Women are discouraged from shooting things and blowing shit up, despite being fun for the whole family.

Query: Were you not carrying a knife before? If you weren't what has suddenly happened that you're constantly using it, but didn't need one before?

I have a little swiss army knife on my keychain. It's super handy.

I know and have known a lot of guys who carry large pocket knives. I refer to them as "knife guys". It's been my experience that at any moment in which a there is even the remotest possibility of a knife being useful, the knife guy will pull the knife out, flick the blade open and wedge himself in there to solve the problem.

"Don't worry, gram-gram, I'll cut that ribbon off. I've got a KNIFE."

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Your take is not based on facts but rather on a utopian idea that nothing bad can ever happen to you. I'm sure almost EVERY person who has been the target of violent crime thought the exact same thing too.

Violent crime does not limit itself to bad neighborhoods. It can happen ANYWHERE at ANYTIME to ANYONE.

Personally, I would rather be prepared to protect myself and my loved ones than to be a victim.

I deal with a lot of shipped boxes at work, so now I stop asking for box cutters or scissors, but I can't begin to list all the things I've used it for since I carried it. I never thought, "Man, this would be easier if I had a knife," but as soon as I started carrying it, I found tons of uses.

Opening packages, scraping off sticker residue from my windshield, cutting off a bit of sole coming off my Chucks...all sorts of stupid little things.

Sounds like you were ill-prepared for the rigors of daily life before.

I don't carry a knife. 99.99% where I need one is in the kitchen - I have several there!

Carrying a knife for self-defense is complete nonsense and stupid!
- if it's a fist-fight, you either win or lose like a man
- if it's a gun-fight, you're an idiot if you participate with a knife
- if it's a knife-fight, the best self-defense is going away

Everything is so absolute, isn't it.

I'm sure every one's as manly as you are.

- if it's a gun-fight, you're an idiot if you participate with a knife
You're right; that's why I also carry a gun.

After all, it is a perfect world, isn't it? You just say, "Excuse me, Mr. Angry Man, but I don't feel like participating today."

Wouldn't the gun make your knife redundant for self-defense purposes?

It's not a perfect world, but it is less of one when you have to worry about getting in knife fights - my two cents. I kind of understand carrying a gun around for self defense, but I gotta agree with this poster on the knife for self defense thing.

I used to carry a basic fold-up knife many years ago. Never left home without it. Eventually I got away from it because it dawned upon me that the chances of me getting hemmed up by the cops for carrying a concealed weapon were a lot greater than me actually having to use it in self-defense. So these days I only carry it if I'm outside exercising. Walking, biking, hiking, etc. Mainly to deal with loose dogs or what not.
