You probably need to format the disk using Disk Utility which is found in on your computer Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
In Disk Ultility there is a window to the left. two drives should be listed the original in your machine and the new one you just put in. Select the new drive and then the Erase button to the right.
For more information use the Help command (top most command bar on the screen) and select disk formating or formating new disk.

I assume you mean you are adding a second drive to your computer. If so, your original drive is your master and the new second drive is the slave. However, most drives are set as "master' from the factory. You should see a sticker on the drive (near where the pins are) indicating which pin you need to toggle to change it to a "slave" setting. The the drive should appear on your desktop and you will be able to format it. You probably don't want to partition it - can lead to grievances with permissions and file access unless you understand how that works.
Hope this helps.

Pardon my ignorance, but are SATAs set-up master/slave in the G5? Aren't they on seperate channels (busses, whatever...)?

Right, that's what he meant to say, I'm sure.

This is clearly not the dumbest question I have read. So I gotta say I am a little disappointed.

Ha!
I was having trouble with my master not mounting, but I think that's because my drive was f-ed at the time. What I did was boot off a 10.2 cd, launch Disk Utility and mount it.
Another question, could you mount it through Terminal (or single user)? Or does slave/master toggle switch prevent any mounting (that sounded like it should've been posted in the lounge)?

I'm not sure if this applies to your situation, but in my Dual 1.25 G4, I set the jumpers (see your drives docs) to cable select. Detected perfectly no problems.
