That would work-I had mine in the late 90s.
As for carrier history, I've been with:
Cellular One (which bought the name...)
AT&T Wireless (which was bought by...)
Cingular (which bought Bell South and thus the rights to the name...)
AT&T Wireless (the NEW AT&T)
Kinda boring, but I've had good service the whole time.

The beauty of GSM, switching phones whenever you want, and of course, the ability to purchase unlocked phones from other carriers or phones that were never released by your provider.
I will never switch back to CDMA.
I will never buy another provider branded phone, except for the iPhone.

I started out with a Samsung N400, then switched to a Sanyo SCP-5300, both Sprint branded.
Then I ditched Sprint, and went with Cingular, and got a Motorola V557.
Now I use a Nokia 6125, purchased in Greece, so the keypad has both Latin and Greek characters on it, and Greek firmware. Nice, simple-looking phone.
