the basic model says wifi only, but can it still be connected to my computer via a usb cable? or does "wifi only" mean wifi only!?

All iPads have a Dock connector for connecting to your computer through a USB port, but this is not a "connection" the same way WiFi is. And you can't update or back up an iPad via WiFi, even though you can surf with that connection. The Dock connector and then wireless connection are two different things with different purposes.

It connects to the device on one end and a USB port on the other end.
