Jut thought I'd make one thread for announcements about which stores have 17" PBs on display, or for demo, or for news about ETAs.

In other words, I wanted one thread to check instead of five.

Northridge, CA has a model you can actually use.

Cambridge, MA has one. Got it yesterday.
They still don't know when we can buy it but they are suggesting the online store as the fastest option.

I'm off. Who cares about the snow now!!

Westfarms, CT does NOT have one. They do not know when they will be getting a display/demo model. They figured 'soon'. Whatever the heck that is supposed to mean.

From another thread: Apparently Miami has a demo model and is expecting them in stock by the end of Februrary.

Last night I dropped by the Palo Alto Apple store and they had one 17" demo model. I had to stand in line, but once I got a shot at it I was impressed.

I didn't have a chance to bend the lid (heh), but the main thing that struck me was how rigid the keyboard/wristrest area was-- compared to my 15" TiBook, there was no 'bounce' or give when typing, which was reassuring. The machine has a great feel.

I played with the 17" in the Apple Store @ the Falls (Miami) and it's an impressive machine.

Great screen and sound system but, to large for me to consider truly portable. Just got there this morning saw by chance. Hmmm... get current TiBook or wait for 15" AluBook?!

The Lenox mall Apple store has one in Atlanta Georgia.

It's the can't touch this prototype. Sitting in the window, running the mini me video over and over. The sales guy said no touchy on this one. The touch ones where coming sometime.

I was at the Short Hills NJ store this past Saturday. I asked one of the sales guys if they had the 17" and he asked me if I wanted to buy one that day. When I said no, I just wanted to see it, he procurred one from the back room. I got to get a good look at it, and spent about 5 minutes checking it out, while he watched me like a hawk. So they do have one in the store. Maybe I wasn't supposed to see it... maybe he just liked my smile...

Ditto for the emeryville bay street store. I got to play with one for a brief few moments.

It was too awesome.

I just went to the apple store today, there's a non-working 17" in the window on display.

On a side note, while checking things out I ran into Michael Stipe from REM while he was shopping for a laptop bag. Small world.

There's a revolving display in the window of the Apple Store Soho (NYC) with a non-working (battery's out) 17"-er. I didn't ask them to take it down but I don't think they would. Appropriately enough, there's a huge ad in another window that reads: "17" Powerbook: Now You See It, Now You Don't"

On another note, out of 4 12" PBs there, 3 have broken latches.

I went to Palo Alto. All they have is a window display. They said I couldn't touch it. Didn't have an in store demo to use. The people who said they used it must be pretty special.

They have a nonworking 17" Ti in the store at the Sommerset Mall in Troy/Detroit MI. The swore up and down that it wasn't from MacWorld, and was a new one, but I think they were mistaken/lying because the aluminum was really scratched and scuffed for a new one out of the box that has never been started up like they said. Why would they lie to their customers so transparently? On a side note I don't think they new Alubooks will look new any longer than the TiBooks. Eliminating the paint process probably saved money but I don't think it solved the problem that people always complain about.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

They should hire Mr. Whipple look alikes (Please don't squeeze the Charmin), to staff Apple Stores and say, "Please don't touch the 17" PowerBook!"

Still no 17" powerbook display unit at the Crossgates Mall (Albany, NY) Apple store...though they said that they hoped to have one by this weekend. Unfortunately, they said that last week too....
