I plan to upgrade the internal drive of my Powerbook G4 with a new IBM Travelstar 48 GH drive.
Is it possible to buy an external Firewire enclosure for my "old" drive and transfer all the data to the new internal one?
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you!

it is possible in general, but I don't know your specific drive or what enclosures fit it. There is a site that does this kind of thing, but I don't recall the name right now. Someone else should help us out...

Usually you just take your drive, the enclosure, and put them together. The enclosure has a firewire port and then it's just like a firewire drive. A lot of CD-RW manufacturers do this--they take a mechanism developed by someone else and smack it together with their own particular enclosure. A little more involved than that, but you get the idea.

Go to www.firewiredirect.com or www.firewiredepot.com to pick up an external firewire enclosure for the old drive. The old drive should be a regular 2.5" drive so any enclosure made for those drives will work. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ has some aritcles about installing hard drives in external enclosures.

Good Luck

On the subject of upgrading the Ti HD. Does anyone know when the IBM Travelstar 60G drive will ship? I think I want one!

The price and possibilities of the OtherWorldComputing external drive closures at http://www.otherworldcomputing.com/ look awfully good. ~$100.

Anyone tried them?
