I'm a new Mac user with extensive PC knowledge, but very little Mac knowledge. I have built and upgraded several PC's over the years and can troubleshoot them well. I recently inherited a SuperMac C600e/200 from the company I work for and would like some info/advice on upgrading it.

It has a bad CDROM drive which I have managed to salvage another SCSI CDROM from a PowerPC with I had laying around and a dead NIC.

Here are the machine specs:
200Mhz PowerPC 603e (socketed)
40 MHz system bus
64 meg 168-pin DIMM
2.1 gig IDE HD
OS 8.5

What, if any, upgrades can be made to this machine?

Can I get a G3 card for it?

Can it run OS 9 or X?

I don't want to spend too much on it, but would be willing to spend a little if I can bring this machine into the new millenium.

Also, I have IDE drives including CDROM/CDRWs and Harddrives kicking around that were once in Windows based PCs. Can any of these drives be used in this machine?

Being a graphic designer and long-time PC user, I grow tired of the problems I experience with my Windows machine and wish to make the jump to Mac. If this machine can help me get over the hurdle until I can afford a new Mac, I would like to max out it's capabilities.

I didnt read the link that the other guy wrote so it might include the info I have to offer...

(16 onboard with 2- 168 pin 5vv EDO or FPM DIMMs

Thanks for the info. I have tried to install OS 9 off of iMac install and restore CDs but neither one would work. If I wanted to run OS 9, would I have to upgrade this machine with a Sonnet G3 board first?

Is it worth the $250.00 to bring this machine up to 400Mhz? I still need to upgrade the HD, CDROM and memory. Can I put a standard IDE hard drive and CDROM/CDRW drive in it? I have seen a cheap Maxtor 80 Gig HD in the Compusa ad recently along with a cheap CDRW drive.

Or am I better off using the money to put toward a used G3 Mac?
