I recently read an article on some new Epson scanners, and the article mentioned a VP of Marketing's name, so I e-mailed him, regarding Epson's lack of OS X drivers for relatively new printers.I actually received a response tonight (8/7), and I thought I'd share it with everyone, as I can see that I'm not alone in waiting for drivers.
Dear Mr. Groeger,
Epson is fully committed to supporting the Mac OS X operating system. Our
engineers are working aggressively with Apple to optimize print quality and
other image features within the OS X operating system so that Epson
products will continue to provide the best image quality, as they do with
other operating systems.
Currently we have a limited set of drivers available for OS X, which are
specified on our Web site,
www.epson.com. The initial release of this
system did not support many of our printer functions, resulting in
diminished capabilities for most of our products.
However, more drivers are under development. Apple has announced that Mac
OS X version 10.1 will be available in September, offering an upgrade
program to current OS X users. As Apple updates and adds features to the
operating system in this next version, we expect to be able to increase not
only the number of compatible drivers, but also the functionality of those
drivers. Because we believe Apple will restore some key printing
functionality in that release, we are concentrating our efforts on 10.1 so
that we deliver the best to our customers. We regret that you have to wait
but think that it will give you the best results.
Once we get the new release, we will be able to test our products to
determine which ones will perform to the exacting standards of our
much-valued Mac customers. It is our intention to ultimately offer OS X
version 10.1 drivers for the EPSON Stylus Color 740, 760, 860, 777, 880,
900, 900N, 980 and 980N, as well as the EPSON Stylus Photo 870, 875DC,
1270, 2000P, 780, 785EPX, 890 and 1280. It is also our intention to offer
drivers for future desktop printer models. This fall we also plan to
provide drivers for the Perfection 1250, 1650 and 2450, as well as the
Expression 1680 and 1640XL scanners.
This is a very important issue for Epson, so please know that we share your
concerns and are continuing to pursue increased driver support. As OS X
drivers become available for additional Epson products, we will issue press
releases to advise the public. Or you can also check our Web site from time
to time for the updates. I appreciate your concerns and thank you for
taking the time to share them with me.
I was shocked to actually get a response, but it appears that Epson may be listening after all.
