Hi guys!

Everywhere has unwritten rules. In the workplace, at the park, at your great grandmother's house, at a strip club, the casino. There are unwritten rules about what you can and can't do. What you are allowed to talk about. Who you should or shouldn't speak to.

What are the unwritten rules here at MacNN?

1. Two or more paragraphs of text, in a row, will probably not be read

2. High post counts are not necessarily guarantees of good post counts

3. When provoked, zigzag will post something funny

4. Like moths to a lightbulb, provacative threads will attract provacative posters. It's then easy to see a whole thread on "ignore" <--loads fast!

5. If you're going for a threadlock, Demonhood's everyone's favorite for the final word

You're supposed to type your posts normally without hitting the return key after every three or four words. A certain poster here hasn't quite grasped this unwritten rule yet.

If you want to be popular:

1) For every post pick a persona: funny, provocative, or both. If you can manage to suck up to someone popular while doing this, you don't need to read further.

2) Pick a side in every argument. It doesn't matter which side you pick as long as you follow rule #1.

3) DO NOT attempt to win an argument or establish a profound point. Stick to #1.

4) Pretend that offline you are a winner, a conqueror, someone who makes things happen, etc.

5) Boobs or a higher post count makes it easier to be heard if you are not particularly good at being entertaining.

6) Intensity beats Intelligence every time. It's just part of the social order, and MacNN is no exception.

7) No one reads long lists like this. It wasn't particularly funny or provocative. Does a list scream INTENSITY? No. How do you expect to learn the ropes reading dross like this? You have already failed your first test.

Why do I even bother? Feckin' morons. I don't have time to just sit around teaching you people! I've got other things to do! And stuff.

If you want to get cipher's attention just point out a flaw in the theory of evolution. He will call you an ignorant idiot and question your lineage.

Oh, and about the gay and Christian thing, starwarsguy is gay and not a Christian. And if you see a post by Zimphire, you will almost immediately see a post by starwarsguy.

Superchic[k]en posts always get flamed. Usually in this order: Cipher13, Philzilla, SWG, rampant. Cipher13 will take a direct jab, calling him and idiot bluntly, and might also say "your God sucks" too. Philzilla takes pretty much the same route as Cipher13. SWG will then proceed to make light of what he sees as a lack of a "sex life". Any subsequent attacks on SWG will lead to evasion by partial quotes. If the evasion does not succeed, he (Superchic[k]en) is a gay hating homophobic. rampant does not have a set pattern. Somewhere in the post ThinkInsane or Millenium will step and and threaten to ban those mentioned above if they do it again. But it is just a threat and doesn't happen. Ever. Do a search for threads by Superchic[k]en that Cipher13 has posted in. One only needs to look back a few weeks. Then probably Zimphire will post some stuff and people will yell at him; If I knew why I'd tell you. Eventually benign and RooneyX will come in and call all who are Christians retarded, except benign will
do it like this
because it is his
accent or something
moronic.

Then the thread will be locked.

I don't think there are really any unwritten rules here, considering that just about every subject, from sexual to automative, has been covered here at one time or another. Breaking the written rules often enough will get you banned, but that's about it.

This sums it all up perfectly!!!

but... you forgot the part where I jump in with a ***SNIP*** just so people know who I am replying to but don't want to fill the thread with a huge amount of text no one will want to reread no matter how well it is written.

Yes, people here have a problem with Christians. It is good to have another Christian onboard. You are in a major minority here to be female and Christian.

It's not that people have a problem with christians, per se, it's just that this is a discussion forum. Be prepared to be challenged on your views. Most of the heated discussions stem from threads where people feel strongly about an issue. And there some christians who seem to be very strident concerning their beliefs. To be fair, the same can be said about a number of non-christians as well.

You'll find the same argumentative tone in threads about evolution, gun-control, abortion, homosexuality, gay marriage (the big one lately), Iraq & Bush, and the righteousness of Star Wars & The Matrix. You know, all the normal stuff.
The only thing that I am reasonably sure of is that anybody who's got an ideology has stopped thinking. - Arthur Miller

Discussions of cheese are welcome. Scoffing at cheese will get you called bad names.

when in doubt, call someone sweetheart and say they're being silly. It always makes them realize you're right. It's never annoying.

Realize that conversations are cyclical. Each year, there are major threads on abortion, republicans, evolution, christianity, bathroom habits, how many female members there are, food, SUVs, which {car, cellphone, appliance, jetpack} to buy, as well as at least 5 threads for every funny joke/flash movie ever posted online. You will type your heart out in the first such of these threads you encounter, only to later realize that your reasoned arguments have just been absorbed into the internet without a ripple. The next time that argument comes around, you either ignore it or attack with rabid righteousness, eager to be noticed. (Jest sayin, s'all.)

misleading identities are always sniffed out by those with lots of free time and computer savvy. There are many people here who fit that description, and they are bored.
