After u first use iChat it automatically puts the balloon icon on the top of your desktop (next to the volume control and date/time).

Is there a way to remove it from there?

Hold down the Cmd key and drag the icon off the menu bar.

In the general tab of the iChat Preferences, there is a checkbox to "Show status in menu bar" or something to that effect. If you uncheck the box, the iChat symbol will disappear.

I honestly don't mean to offend, but that's the "menu bar".

The "desktop" is the background of your screen, beneath the menu bar.

Just wanted to point it out because your thread title was confusing to me, and it might help avoid misunderstandings in the future.

Carry on.

For a second, I thought Apple was placing aliases on the desktop like every piece of horrible Windows software does (and some Mac)!

I've never had any mac software do that. Or place it's icon on he dock.

I certainly don't miss apps putting an icon on the desktop, the start menu (both in a sub-sub-sub-folder and at the root, so as to appear at the very top of the menu (Winzip)) and an icon in the quicklaunch bar.

LimeWire will by default.

Though at least it gives you the option.
