My iPhone won't connect to the home wifi . It is showing up as a network but when prompted to put in the password I get "unable to join the network".
My iMac is connected to it so I know it's working.
I have no idea how to go about sorting this out can anyone help.
Oh, and by the way I have checked and rechecked that the password is correct etc

I remember being at a mate's house and not being able to connect to his wi-fi despite having the correct password. As this is your own system, why not remove the password protection from your wi-fi for a short time to see if you can connect, then see what happens with the different forms of password protection (WPA, WEP etc).

Do you have an access control list set up on your router? If so, you'll need to add your iPhone's MAC address to the list before it can connect. It'll take the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx format typical of an 'ethernet' address (where xx is a two character value). For the iPhone, you can find out what it is from the Settings>General>About information where it is listed as the Wi-Fi Address.

I tried that and I am still having the same problem without a password!

No
I can join other wifi networks both password protected and not from this iPhone.
Can anyone shed light upon this...

What type and brand of router do you have and what is it broadcasting as (a/b/g/n)?

Sorry for the late response - it's the same router as mine with which my iPhone (3G) works without any problem. Honestly, the only thing I can think of that would prevent it from doing so is an access control list. Alternatively, try switching your router to g only (assuming you don't have anything requiring b) and see if that helps.

What type of encryption? Try turning off encryption and see if it connects then.

You do it from the router control page. Also, I would suggest shutting down/restarting your phone and possibly changing the password to something else.
I've also had luck with restarting the router too. There's a lot of voodoo involved.

This might seem obvious, but are you close enough to the router? I know that on my iPhone I often see hotspots on the wifi list that are actually too weak to be connected to.

Yes, plenty.

Ain't that the truth!!
I'll be trying password / router options next.

When you log in to your router using your browser, under the Wireless Settings section, the following is where you set up the mode, security (encryption) settings and Access List:
While you are there, click the Setup Access List button and double check to make sure that you don't have it on (or if you do, that your iPhone's MAC address is added to the list):

My Netgear router is set up exactly like this except that I have Access control off.
I still cannot get the iPhone to connect.

Disable encryption and see where that gets you.
If that does work, change the name of your wifi point (Name/SSID). Browse for this 'new' wifi point on your iPhone and try it.

I'm totally exasperated with this - I have both changed the SSID and disabled encryption and am still getting 'unable to join the network'.
