What is the reasoning behind 12" 1.25GB ram max.

The ibooks have 512 on board, why does the 12" powerbook not? It seems to me that it wouldbe an easy enough upgrade, would have been ideal to release with the high-res 15" and 17".
It would give one more reason to buy a 12" powerbook over an ibook.

Um... checked Apple's website lately? The 12" PowerBooks do have 512 MB of RAM to start...
unless you mean that you can put more RAM in the 12" iBook than the 12" PowerBook

I find that surprising too ... You'd think it a straightforward buisness to solder in a 512MB chip in place of a 256MB. Perhaps in Apple's eyes it isn't worth changing the design at this stage. There have been rumors to the effect that the 12" will be discontinued when the Powerbooks go Intel (to leave perhaps a 13" iBook with DVI, spanning).

The PB 12" has always been treated a second-class citizen compared to its bigger siblings - the 15" and 17".
It's very hard to choose between a 12" iBook and a 12" PB because there's so little differentiating it.
The biggest reason I choose the PB over the iBook was for monitor spanning. Now you can get monitor spanning on the iBook with a hack available online.
If the rumored 12" iBook would get built-in monitor spanning, I would jump for that.
I'm sure it would be nice to have FW800, backlit keyboard, and a PC Card, but I've lived without it so I don't mind missing those features. But it would be nice to have them. All I know is that I can't live without monitor spanning.

The 12" Powerbook has only 256 MB on the motherboard as opposed to the 512 MB on the iBook. So the iBook can now have a higher max memory than the 12" (1.5 GB vs. 1.25 GB). As far as making the change on the Powerbook, it's not just soldering down different chips. Higher capacity chips are much more expensive. On the iBook, they probably changed the memory package type from a TSSOP to BGA (ball grid array). You can fit twice as many chips in the same area, but you have to reroute the board. The expense may not be worth it for the 12", further indicating it's near EOL.
