Im about to buy a new macbook. I was told I could save a bit of money using the education discount. Problem is I just took a year off uni, so my question is what kind of proof do I need to provide if I was to buy the macbook online?

they might ask for a copy of your ID but that's about it... most of the time you don't need any proof, they just take your word for it

if you still have access to your .edu email, use that to buy the laptop.

If your university has their own computer store you could probably get the same discount there, or even more. I know at the uni I go to, the edu discount for software titles is WAY more than from the apple online education store.

I could have bought my MacBook w/my edu discount but it was cheaper at Amazon because I didn't pay sales tax. You do need to send in a rebate form though.

Or, you could try the refurbs from Apple's online store. They usually have good pricing and come with the same warranty as the brand new models. I got some Macs and iPods from them with no problem.

I bought mine in the Apple store with my edu discount. Walked out with my new MBP on the same day. I'm quite happy.

Ditto to the *refurb* suggestion. I've had NO issues with my refurb Powerbook after 3 years.
Hate this long URL but, get ready to drool at discounts (off original prices) of up to 20+%:
The Apple Store (U.S.) - Refurbished Mac

I've bought two computers via educational discounts. Once as a student and once as a teacher. Both times I was never asked for ID. Even in Japan. Gotta love that discount.

Use the discount for Applecare as well. You save quite a lot.

Holy crap. Refurb Airport Express for $30. Thats 71% off the original price. Holy crap....

I had a tear come to my eye when I saw that they're selling my MBP for 31% off the regular price. So sad...

I think $30 is for an Aiport Express Card rather than the actual AE router.
