Aside from the Apple Store, what are decent online stores that carry iBooks? I'm looking for a cdrw (normally $1599) model for my wife (that'll make 2 for us!). MacWarehouse doesn't carry the cdrw model. Any other suggestions, or should I just buy from Apple? I was hoping to get some free RAM or other perks by buying elsewhere...

Thanks,
Jeff

If you're looking for the $1599 CDRW model, you have to buy it from Apple. The reason Mac Warehouse doesn't carry it is because that's a non retail, special order only model. I sell Macs for an Apple Specialist store, and it's not a stock item.

Mmmm, I would recommend Small Dog Electronics. I've only bought a small item, but it was very rush, I had to select an alternate item because the first choice wasn't available, and everything was handled wonderfully, nice, professional and everything. Very pleasant experience, and unless they're prices are non-competitive, I'll buy my next Mac through them.

I'm looking to buy an iBook, too, and from what I've seen, there are NO deals to speak of. I can't see any real difference between the online retailers. They all offer the Apple deals (free Lexmark printer, rebates on four electronic devices) and most of them throw in some "free" RAM, usually 128MB. But they all charge about $30 to install the RAM for you (and I don't think this is optional - someone correct me if I'm wrong), and hell, you can buy 256MB of RAM for an iBook for $30 (see http://dealram.com).

Frankly, I'm strongly considering just buying my iBook from CompUSA or Circuit City. At least I can return it locally if there is a problem.

I watch Deal-Mac (http://deal-mac.com) religiously, but if you go there now and search on "iBook" you just won't find any amazing deals.

Geez, these boards are slow.

Anyway, I've bought from Clubmac & Smalldog. There's an obvious difference in the way you're treated. I bought a G4 tower from Club Mac last Sept. and I felt like I bought it basically from a big department store, because I wasn't given any kind of customer courtesy or anything. I was a first time mac user at the time and they proved to be inept in answering my questions and they were the so called mac-experts.

Smalldog, I bought my ibook(icebook) from in June. They were really help although many of the questions I had had last Sept. had been answered by trial error. I would buy from them again. Sometimes there prices are slightly higher but they make that up in great customer service and they always answer your emails. I can say from experience, CLUBMAC DOESN'T.

Apple is on that list and has been on the list since at least November, 2000 when I purchased my Pismo.

Okay, let's keep this discussion going a bit.

Raman, did you actually have trouble with this policy? And are you saying that according to the posted policy that Outpost does NOT handle Apple returns at all, even within 30 days?

Again, I ask: why buy online?? The only expense you skip is tax, which I can understand can be a lot of money. But at least with a local shop you can return it for repair... though I suppose Circuit City doesn't repair in house, though CompUSA might. (Those are the only retailers near me that sell Apple, at least major retailers.)

Are there any other benefits to buying online or buying from a retailer that I'm missing? How about Apple stores? We don't have one here yet, but we will be getting one next year, supposedly.

I'm close to buying an iBook, so I'm interested in opinions. Previously, I bought all my stuff online - mostly at Outpost because of the free overnight delivery. But that's gone now. So, I can either pay tax and have it today and have a local place to return it to, or buy online, save the tax (hopefully), not pay shipping (maybe), but have to send it via shipper for any problems. To me, it's probably worth paying the taxes.

I don't see any real deals on the hardware at all - every price I've seen, at local retailers or online, is within $5 of MSRP. Why is that?? Are the margins THAT low?? Does Apple have minimum pricing agreements??

Do iBooks ship with 10.1 pre-installed now or are they still shipping 10.0?

Do the physical Apple Stores sell iBooks with 20GB drives or is this an online only option?

Thanks

I think the best place to buy from is the Apple Store. I've looked at a lot of sites for Apple, but the store is the most user friendly.

Just to catch up with the thread: After I learned that nobody but Apple (or local stores that take special orders) carries the CDRW model, I ordered one from the Apple Store. They had them backordered for 10+ days as of last week, so I cancelled and stepped my search up to a DVD/CDRW model and just wound up buying one locally at Circuit City. Added in an extra 128MB for $20 at BestBuy and that's that.

It's strange and cool to be a 2-iBook household, especially when we're working in the same room together.

(Hey, mods - I can't see the 11th reply in the regular view. I can't see any replies after my second one, until I reply. In the regular forum view, I see no posts for mikeloader or different1. I only see them now that I'm in reply mode.) UPDATE: Now that I've replied, I can see the two posts in between my posts. Weird.

mikeloader, I have the same question: is 10.1 pre-installed?

Also, does it ship with a 9.2.1 install CD, or do you need to upgrade to 9.2.1 from 9.x?

And can you use all the bundled software on another Mac, say a G4/400 (AGP)?

And for different1, were you talking about the brick-and-mortar Apple store or the virtual one? I'm assuming the real stores. Problem there is that most of us don't live by one (yet).

The iBook I just bought (locally at Circuit City, as mentioned above), came with OS 9.1 and 10.0.3. Luckily I already had the upgrades for both OSes on hand, so I really didn't care what it came with.

This says nothing for what Apple is currently shipping, just what local stores still have in stock.
