Sheesh!! Everytime Steve Jobs makes an announcement there is such a batch of whining going on!! He gives you what you ask for and you complain. He asks for $100 either in a price hike or an upgrade and you start to whine. If he gave it all away for free you whine.

Whatever happened to MAC support?? Good grief!! They have to raise funds to stay alive and competitive. They raise funds by selling their product. Why should Apple be any different than any other business?? At least, unlike 99% of the major corporations today, they listen to you and try to give you exactly what you want at the best prices they can.

Stop sounding like cranky Windows users and look at the big picture. Do you want to continue using Macintosh computers?? Or do you want them to go belly up and leave you to become a cranky Windows user?? Think about it!!

Go Steve!! Keep listening and keep up the good work!!
God Bless America!

They also could make a long term investment by making Jag a free upgrade as incentive to transfer over to X. Without that transfer everyone loses. Software makers wont have the market to create new titles for, Apple hardware sales lag as people do not have the chance to try out X and want new computers to use it on, and so on.

There is not as large a share of Mac users on X as in classic. Old G3 computers far out number Quicksilvers and TiBooks. All those people who are happy with 9 are not going to take a chance on X with an already aging computer for an additional $130.

This was a wasted opportunity for Apple to get more people over to X.
So shut up.

Apple is just trying to make some money, unfortunately they seem to be going about it a little wrong for their existing users.

HOWEVER, with the whole .Mac thing, do MS offer anything the same FOR FREE?

you even have to pay for Hotmail now.

I am sad that I will be losing my mac.com email address, but it really is not the end of the world.

I'm boooored with those people that know it all and think Apple doesn't know what they are doing.

Like SJ said, the transistionof 9 to X is the fastest one in computer history because it's such a radical one. The more radical the difference with 9 become, the more people will be willing to pay the difference (and Apple will make money too)

This already happened in the past when shitty hardware running shitty os7+ dropped apples market share from 15% to 5%. If jobs keeps this up....making people pay for what was essentially a beta os (10.0) and then repay for the real deal (10.2), they will succeed in pissing off a large number of users. Microsoft can afford that...apple cant.

People bitched and moaned, 'Give us X now!!! The future of Apple depends on the early release of X! Blah Blah Blah!' Apple, like usual, gave into consumer demand and look what happend ... people complained like hell.

Apple isn't ticking anyone off. The Mac Zealots are making themselves upset because they still think Apple has been the exact same company for the past 25 years and can't see that the world, the Internet, and Apple are all changing.

Like Steve said Jaguar includes over 150 major updates. $1/update isn't too much to ask. We already get four of the best digital hub apps in the world (iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, and iPhoto) and soon we'll be getting more for free. Look at XP. That was nearly a $100 upgrade. And what did that buy you? A little added stability, eye candy, and a tighter grip from Redmond.

But, as it stands now, I perceive my 2 year old G4 500DP to be just about as fast as most of the current line up, with the possible exception of the 1Ghz DP. Meanwhile, PC's have nearly quadrupled in speed over the same time frame.

I hate griping, but Apple's woes are of their own doing. 4 years ago, they listened to their customers... They simplified the product line, gave us the iMac, and made us excited about the future of Apple! Now, they seem more interested in giving us the same crap in a different package. Anything exciting that may have been introduced in today's keynote has been completely overshadowed by the removal of our free e-mail.

I predict that 6 months from now nobody here will care one bit that they had to pay $129 for Jaguar. They'll have long put these arguments behind them. So frankly, I don't see any reason to make a fuss about it now.

But there will be compensations. Very good Java speed finally as compared to the Mac. JDK 1.4. As many JRE's as I want. A game or two. Cheaper software than on the Mac (JASC PSP specifically, I always liked this little critter.) Bigger software choice than on the Mac.

But I reckon I will still be pining for a Mac.
