In my experience I have grown out of my current 384 mb. Everything over this is recommended in the long run.

Go for a 512MB!

Because there's only one free slot and it would be darn foolish not to max it when you've got a chance. You will profit higher performance and less frustration and that'll be worth more to you in one years time than any money in the world!

I've got the 800 12" with 640MB...
My room mate has a 600 with 128MB...

I must say that the speed in OSX isn't hugely different. Mine is faster but you aren't blown away by the speed.
I notice the real difference when having a lot of apps open at once, many windows etc and of course when I use a heavy app like Photoshop.

I never tried my Ibook with 128MB so I can't tell you how fast it would have been without it but it would definetly be interesting to see some sort of real life benchmarks.

If you use more than one or two apps at a time, or use a couple of RAM-heavy apps like Photoshop or another image editor, max it out. More is always better....

I maxed out my iBook 800 the day I bought it. I didn't get a chance to do much comparison work, but I like the speed it moves at now. BTW, I didn't go with Apple RAM. I bought locally from a computer store in my area.

As xtal did, I also maxed my 800 from day one. With over seven years of experience from different Powerbooks I just knew what to do with the new iBook... (RAM is relatively cheap today compared with the last century)

I have 384 in my combo 500 but when I got my combo 800 I put 640 and a IBM 40Gb 5400RPM drive the day I received it and I was amazed at the improvement in OSX but, I am not sure if the improvement is solely from the memory.

I'm sure the memory helps but it was the whole package that makes this iBook rock. Its the 32Mb video for Quartz Extreme, the faster proccessor, faster bus, faster hard drive with more free space, and OSX Jaguar.

But when I replaced the hard drive in the 500 iBook, with the 30Gb drive from the 800 iBook there was a noticeable improvement to the 500 iBook because the previous HD in the 500 was almost full so, I am thinking that OSX utilizes the hard disk for certain tasks beyond the memory so, I am assuming that you should not max out your hard drive for performance reasons and also because the more you fill up a hard drive the slower the drive is able to access files.

Anyway, more ram is preferred since it is relatively affordable now so I would reccomend maxing out your ram.

I maxed it out and went with 640MB. I wanted to be sure and have OS X run smoothly as well as get some help on playing a few games. Plus it's always nice it be able to have plenty of apps open at the same time.

Has anyone ever seen any benchmarks or evidence to support that 640 MB of RAM will make enough of a difference to justify the cost over 384 MB RAM?

I never even booted my iBook with the default 128MB of memory. The first thing I did when I took it out of the box was crack it open and put in my 512 stick. I felt it was best to just put in all it would take since I would probably want it that way eventually, and why waste the money on a smaller chip that will be one day thrown out.

OK I got a Powermac, but you should always max out a mac when you buy it, IMHO. Even if you've got to get a cheaper mac to afford it, ram is what you need.

I got 1.5 gig in this sucker, and you really notice it switching between a lot of apps, and especially while using Adobe apps.

You can take the ram with you too, when upgrading (depending on what you upgrade to).

I'd recommend you get as much ram as you can afford, you won't be disappointed.

I've got 640 MB in my 800. You've got one chance to add memory, and you might as well take advantage of it.

I don't bother to close apps anymore. The extra RAM gives you the overhead to keep 'em running. Much nicer than having to start apps all the time. You also don't get the pageout-induced spinning beachball nearly as often. It's been days since I've seen it actually...

Put is this way, no one ever sits there and wishes they has less RAM.
