Veronica Mars movie is a go

Heads-up, fans of Veronica Mars. After years of trying, Rob Thomas made a final effort at the finances. With Warner Bros approval, he listed it on Kickstarter with a $2 million target.
It passed the $2 mil target in 11 hours (a record), with a month left to go. Currently at $3.6 million with 26 days to go. The higher the budget goes, the more he can put in the movie.
So it is coming after all, expected delivery February or March of 2014. Anyone interested can still help. Though all the pledges that let you appear in the movie have already sold out.
One down note - people are talking about reviving other TV shows with Kickstarter. But Joss Whedon is tied up until 2016 at least, so no KS Firefly plans. Sorry. Maybe JMS will get interested though. Or RDM.

I posted about this in the "what made you smile" thread, it's all pretty exciting as I'm a big VM fan. I tried to get people here to donate funds, but they complained "it's already over $2M, they don't need any more money now".

Mainly I complained that they don't ship any of the nifty stuff outside the US. Even without that, I might have donated if they were close to the target and time was running out, but that isn't going to happen now.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Look again - they updated the goodies since I posted. They all now list
Add $10 to ship outside the US

MovieBob - Kickstopper.
MovieBob is probably right: this is the beginning of major corporations turning crowd-funding from a way to support the little guys who they shunned into a scheme to make consumers pay for market research.

While I can see some people will want to take advantage of Kickstarter, I don't believe it's the case in this instance.

Kristen Bell should do lap dances to raise funds.
I'd pay in.

Who wouldn't? You probably could ship her overseas for $10 too, she's only small.

Forgot to reply to this. I hadn't read that thread. Missed a bunch of Wheadon shows discussion.
Veronica is up to 3.72M, and it sounds like the KS campaign will be the entire production budget. WB will cover distribution and advertising. So the higher the total goes, the better the movie will look. And the subplot on the Chinese bride ring may happen after all.

No way. They'd have to cheap-out on a lot of things, which is crazy if the goal is to create a film franchise.

As I said in the other thread, that's plenty if everyone above-the-line takes points instead of a salary.

Update for anyone who didn't pledge, or missed the story.
The Kickstarter total ended at $5.7 M, enough so they could film in the LA area. This means a chance to revisit familiar locations, and a better chance of scoring cast members. A lot of the old cast, and numerous possible guest stars, live in the LA area.
Filming began last Monday. Today opens the 2nd week of production. They got back at least half the old cast, probably more. Rob Thomas is happy with the production quality so far. It looks like everything is on schedule.

Update for anyone interested. Filming finished back in July, and the movie release date has been announced. March 14, 2014.
It's not finished yet, they're still doing editing, scoring, and special effects. But it is a lot closer.

It was on the Kickstarter comments page briefly before, I assume, the mods took it down. More than likely it wasn't a real "offer", just a joke.

The movie is complete, as of a week ago. Currently in duplication for theaters, and being mastered for DVD and Blu-Ray.
The studio has to do the DVD/Blu work immediately, since some kickstarter backers are promised those right after theater release.
March 14: wide release in USA and Canada. They're still working out the release details for additional countries.

Yep, yep. If you want a quick mini-review after the discs go out let me know, I'll be getting one and can tell you if it's worth the price of admission. I'm suspecting it will be, all the info I've gotten along the way has been fantastic, especially if you're a big fan of the series. #hopsupanddownexcitedly

I haven't gone to a theater in years - home theater is so much more pleasant. Quieter, pause button, snacks at fair prices, no night-vision-equipped cops looking for anyone holding a cell phone. But please post the mini-review anyway. We all want to know.

Hey guys, will anyone here be appearing in the movie? There were a bunch of donor slots that included (mostly extras) roles in the movie. All of which sold out really quickly. They were gone before I pledged, and cost more than I was willing to kick in.

Well, it's a far sight better than NFS. In fact, if you loved the show, you'll feel the same about the movie. It's like a big budget, extra long VM episode, and that's a-ok by me.

Is this a stand alone movie or do you need to watch all 3 seasons of the TV series to understand what's going on?

Rented it this weekend (yay itunes). I enjoyed it a lot, fun cameos. As expected, a little too much Logan-angst, but I think most fans like that. It ended at basically a reset, setting the stage for more VM.
For anyone interested, I got the followup book "Thousand dollar tan line." It was pretty good, the first few chapters suffered from clumsy exposition, but it settled in and had lots of snark and twists. Logan spent most of the book shipped off on a submarine, so that was good. Has some closure for other issues from the show. Anyone wants to borrow, send a PM.

My ex just saw it, which is notable because she did her master's thesis on the TV show. She said it was odd to see them all grown up.
I immediately needed to ask if Dax had a cameo.

I saw it a couple weeks ago - what was up with pointing out the size of the flash drive/SD card? Is that an inside joke I don't get because I haven't watched the show?

They used flash drives, hard drives, and an iPod Shuffle (1st gen) in the show. I don't recall any floppies.

A rumor I just read said that 2.56m was the box office the movie had to make to garner a sequel. It seems kind of low, in that I know Serenity made more than that and that wasn't enough to get a sequel for them.

Serenity would have cost a lot more than the few million the VM Kickstarter raised. Lots of CGI.
