My desktop all of a sudden does not see my external drive anymore when I go to backup my computer. Does anyone know what's wrong and how I can fix this?

Thank,

Lee

Have you tried launching Disk Utility? That will usually force an external drive to appear on the Desktop.

Unless you upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion in which case drives do not show up on the desktop by default. You can change that in the Finder preferences.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I am running 10.7.4. Disk utility didn't work. I'm not real computer literate. How do I find Finder preferences?

Thanks

Click on the desktop.
Upper-left of the screen...Click on Finder.
Scroll down to Preferences.

The show "external hard disks" was already selected. Before I moved the computer to another room (which is when this problem started) the external backup disk was showing on my desktop. Now it's not if that helps solve this problem. I hate to think that the external disk is already bad. It's less than a year old.

You can check to see if there is any sign of it under Disk Utility (In Applications -> Utilities), if not click the Apple menu and choose about this Mac, then click more info and then choose system profile. The disk should be listed under USB or firewire depending how it connects.

I did not see a "system profile." My options were, Overview, Display, Storage andMemory. My external disk was not shown under Storage.

What sort of connection is the external drive using? It could be a bad port or cable.

What version of the OS are you using?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I give up. Thanks for all your help everyone. Drives are cheap and I need to back-up my computer. It's been over two weeks and if this thing fails I'm in trouble. I'm just going to get a new HD.

Make sure it's plugged in to a wall outlet.

actually the bad cable idea has merit. If it worked, you moved the computer and reset up in another room, maybe everything did not get plugged in all the way, or a port is bad. Does the hard drive light up? Do you have another computer to plug it into?
