For some inexplicable reason every time I try to launch the Desktops and Screensaver tab of System Preferences it crashes and gives me a message saying it has unexpectantly quit. This only happens in this particular tab; all the others work flawlessly. What's more, I distinctly remember using said tab no less than three days ago. Apparently this is a new thing.

I'm running Panther 10.3.3 on a Rev C 12" PB less than a week old. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Just did, and the problem persists. Any other ideas before I prepare the human sacrifice demanded by the OSX Gods?

Hmm, well you can try removing (don't trash, just move to Desktop for testing) the "Desktop Pictures" out of /Library and see if the prePane will load...

Again, still crashes. For what it's worth, I occasionally am able to access the different pictures and such for maybe 3 seconds before it quits on me again. Not sure if this matters.

Any other tips? It's kind of annoying since I got a pretty cool new image I want to align to my desktop.

Have you added any pictures to the "Desktop Pictures" folder? Screensavers?

Also, just to make sure, you have restarted the machine, right?

Does it affect all users on the machine?

I haven't added any pictures/screensavers, I rebooted the machine and I have no other accounts set up. It's at the default configuration (the opposite of root, whatever that is).

I take it this isn't a common problem. Very odd, that it should only affect this particular tab.

Can you post the information from the SystemPreferences.crash.log please?

Thanks.

Finder didn't pick up any file by that name. Do you perchance mean the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file?

Thanks for all the help by the way. We'll nail it eventually.

You can try searching just for "crash.log" in the Finder and see if it turns up...every app that crashes in OS X has an associated crash.log file that can sometimes help reveal whats happening...

Ah, gotcha. I found the file, but it's a bit too big to just post. I've uploaded it to my public iDisk folder here. Though how you can make sense of any of that is beyond me.

The bottom third of the log was deleted for space reasons. It was basically the same stuff as that above.

Just started experiencing the same problem. This was the first time I've tried to access the pane since I've reverted from 10.3.4 back to 10.3.3. The thing just quits out every time. Every other one works. This bothers me to a point, but as long as it's fixed in 10.3.5 which should be expected to be released sometime soon, then I don't mind. I just can't go back to 10.3.4 unless I want to completely give up my graphics card capabilities! Anyone find a fix yet?

How about moving the com.apple.systempreferences.plist to your trash or something and then running system preferences again.

Did that help? Hoping it created a new plist...

it should pop up if you search for it in Finder - just type "systempref" or something.

otherwise I suspect it's in Preferences folder !?

Nope, didn't work. Guess I'll have to wait for 10.3.5 and see what people say about the graphics fix. Thanks, though.

Well, since that one crash log was a bit long, and you actually ended up chopping off one of the most important parts, why don't you try this:

1) Launch Console (should be in Applications/Utilities folder)
2) Press the "Logs" button (menu should appear on left after this)
3) Select ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/System Preferences.crash.log from the side menu that appears
4) Press the "Clear" button (text on the right should disappear after this)
5) Immediately go to the System Preferences and repeat the process that gets it to crash
6) Look back at Console and copy/paste that code to the boards as it is right then

Hopefully it'll be considerably shorter since you'd be getting rid of all the old junk, and it'll help us find out a possible problem more quickly. Anyway, I'm not great at reading the console logs, but I get lucky every now and then and can use them to find an answer. There are others here that live and breathe them though...
