1 way: Save them with Photoshop and lower the quality as a JPEG.

PNG's are a good thing. ;p But yeah, if you don't have Photoshop you can just use Preview to export them as JPEG's. (is this really a OS X question?)

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type image_format

image_format can be jpg, pdf, gif or png

Then log out and log back in.

You might try iResize, Freeware. http://www.daniele.ch/downloads.html

Can easily resize .jpeg, .pict, .tiff and .psd

Works great for me, easy to use, and the price is right.

You might want to grab your screenshots using Preview (File:Grab) and then, as suggested, saving them as JPGs. All neatly in one app. Setting the default, as suggested above is even nicer.

And TinkerTool will let you do that too.

While TinkerTool can save images in different formats, it can't resize them.

shotchoice

gives u easy access to change screenshot type; do a standard command shift 4 (or 3) and it be the format you choose...

JPEGs suck. They introduce all kinds of image noise and artifacts.

I use ImageWell which works perfectly for screen shots and you can annotate them as well. Drop a png in ImageWell and it is converted to a jpg and you can just drag the image to mail.app!
