I have a copy of Panther Academic on order (legaly of course, as I am a student). My problem is this- it was shipped to my dorm room, and I am now out of town for a week (ARGH!! Bad planning!!!). There is an apple store near me at home, and if the academic box is identical to the retail box, I was thinking of buying a retail copy at the apple store (to install it on my PB while at home), and then return the unopened academic box to the apple store near my school, and get the $129.00 back. (as long as that academic box is identical, I dont see any problem with doing this). I noticed that the part number is identical between the web store academic version, and the in-store retail version.

No, I mean the box itself.. is it the same (or does it have an academic badge on it).. So that I could return the sealed academic box, as a retail box to the apple store. Ex:

1) bought academic version online, then went out of town (DOH!) $69

2) buy retail copy out of town for $129

3) install said retail copy on laptop

4) go back to school

5) return academic box to retail store near school as a retail copy, and get my $129 back.

If they are the same box, all that would do is let me install it now, and still pay the academic price.

With all the reported bugs, you may be better off waiting a week since it seems you need that laptop for school. I think I'm gonna wait another week or two to buy Panther, to see if anyone has problems with it.

I too got the academic pricing as a student.

My box says "MAC OS X 10.3 PANTHER RETAIL" near the UPC. No where on it does it say "Academic" at least that I have seen.

Too many Apple/Mac products to even bother listing!

I know this might start a flame war.. but, in this case, might you be justified in using a downloaded copy of Panther? Since you already own the box, you should be justified in downloading a backup copy off the internet.

The version of Panther that is shipping is 7B85 right?

if there are no objections to the legality of this, I can give you a link to a place where you can get 7B85 - I'll PM it to you in that case

This might save you a some money if your other plan doesn't work.

Btw for all those about to flame me and call me a pirate, I am waiting for my copy of Panther to arrive next week, a legitimate, licensed and paid for version mind you. Until then, I am still running Jaguar (also legitimate, and bought without the student discount I was entitled for.. cus I am a dumb-ass)

Dude, just wait a week! It's an OS upgrade, not antibiotics.
