I recall there was a concerted effort to get us paying before we pumped at one point, I forget the reason. Its mostly gone away now. Where I live at least.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I'm of two minds on the "latch" thing for fuel stations. I see WAY too many people getting back into their cars while the pump is running, or making cell calls while standing next to the filler as the pump runs. And now and then I see idiots filling fuel cans IN their vehicles - I have actually seen what happens when you do that and Bad Things Happen.

On the other hand, I keep an eye on my fueling status while I clean my car's windows, and so do plenty of people, so I actively use that "latch" just about every time I fill up.

If you've ever seen something "blow up" in a movie, that's not from using high explosives, it's from gasoline*.

I've gotten back inside the car while pumping when it's really cold out... or just walked in to get a Nacho Slim Jim when it's not.

*I have a feeling you know this, Glenn. It's more for those playing at home.

The Mythbusters had a hell of a time getting the gas in a car to ignite.

The trick to getting gas to ignite is to have the gas-air mixture correct. Outside? No big deal. It will dissipate before being dangerous. Inside a closed compartment like a car? Problem.

I never considered gasoline something where there's really a trick to it. Pour some on something, throw a match on it.

people like to avoid me on April fool's day. Half of the office called in sick, or used a PH, on the off-chance I'd show up there and prank them. Seriously? What did I do to deserve such a rep?

But don't they use a charge to disperse the gasoline first? You cann't just toss a match on a bucket of gasoline and get a huge fireball.

They know this is to lure them into a false sense of security.

You set it up this way so they get nailed every seven years.

If you went in more on Fridays, you'd know their nickname for you is "The Cicada".

Today I learned there are switch covers used by Orthodox Jews so they don't accidentally shut off the lights on the sabbath.

They get excited when a goy is around on sabbath, they have someone around they can ask to do stuff for them (seriously).

I was assuming a light cover was to keep the monsters under the bed. It sounds more like they're not allowed to do anything that day? Better invest in autoflush toilets and motion-activated lights. Proximity-activated faucets and hand dryers would be good too.

Yeah, they can't do anything that could remotely be considered "work". I once heard 2 rabbis talk about whether opening the fridge on the sabbath was kosher or not... for 6 hours. That's why Jews make amazing lawyers, there's nothing they like more than arguing about minutiae.

There's still a segment that see workarounds like that as cheating.

Should they decide to open it, there are special refrigerators with a "sabbath mode". Opening the door won't turn on the light.

Friend has a wine fridge like this.

Yeah, that was part of the problem; the one rabbi contended that since opening it turned on a light, it was the same as turning on a light switch (or lighting a candle). We didn't have fancy refrigerators like that around when I was a kid. So, after that 6 hour debate, they decided it was best to remove the bulb on Fridays before dusk.

The Pope's doctors are traditionally Jewish, to save a Catholic the awkwardness of... well, think about it.

Or don't.

Or, simpler to tape the fridge light button down.
I also wonder why more jewish households don't use the Clapper. No sparks made.

Yep. A "real" explosion is a big, black/gray "POOF" with LOTS of thunderclap type boom. Here's a real hand grenade explosion:

Movies use fire and the slow, expansion of the fireball for dramatic purposes. There IS a bright flash, but it's over very quickly.

A good idea for a stupid reason quickly becomes a stupid idea.

Doing no work so you relax, recharge, spend quality time with family etc is a good idea. Not being allowed to feed yourself properly or turn the ****ing lights on is just dumb.
