Today I haven't learned a dang thing. And tonight I may even lose a couple of learned things, thanks to Guinness and a certain Irish pub.

You should see how many are stopped by either the automated filters or Thorz' precognitive abilities...

It is not about us who still come here to post, it is about the google juice.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Okay... I'm hoping people could see that pic, see the SG watermark, and understand how someone could jump to the conclusion that's from a set of mugshots.

Turns out that's not a mugshot, but from when she was in the Marines.

So, my apologies to Ms. Arthur, and let me note I thought it was cool she had a rap sheet.

Honestly, I think it was cool she was in the Marines.

Even though I should have realized ages ago, today I learned the theme song for I Love Lucy is uncomfortably close to the theme for Star Trek.

They're both Desilu joints, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, yet it is nevertheless.

I learned that being a Tripper is a thing (they're people who get totally stoned out of their minds and screw). Back in my day we just called that the weekend.

I think I saw that about to happen last night.

Before knowing this term I'd be forced to call it "bottle of Cuervo and a three-way".

Today I learned Walmart and Costco sell caskets, and it's illegal for a funeral home not to let you outsource a casket.

Not looking, just something I read. Besides, I'd rather be torched and dumped into the Gulf of Mexico.

Like Deepwater Horizon.

From what I understand, if I acquire a $3,000 permit through the state, my family can dump my body in the Gulf of Mexico.

How would they know if you didn't get a permit? Just rent a boat, go out, say a few words, and dump you. It's not like the fish will report you, they'll be too busy chowing down on your flakes.

That's actually my reason for wanting this (no joke).

I either want my body donated to science or feeding the ocean.

I'm thinking if I force someone to do something because I'm dead, it should be a trip to Key West.

And to prove that scientists often have no concept that "normal" people may feel squeamish about things I was listening to one explaining about a new method of disposing of bodies that involved cryogenically freezing the body then shattering it into dust with some kind of sonic effect. Said scientist was nonplussed that people seemed to find the idea off putting.

Reading the book Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers made me convinced that I didn't want to be buried in some boring cemetery. It's an absolutely fantastic (and hilarious) read for anyone interested.

The bits about cadavers being used in car safety testing that left me both squeamish and chuckling.

It would take quite a bit of energy to cryogenically freeze someone I imagine. Bad for the environment, carbon footprint and all... Although the idea of freezing me to ~0 so I could be brittlely broken into bite size chow for fish or animals is appealing. I dont like this $3000 permit, is there a free way to die? What about swamp gators?

Some years ago, we had a neighbor. Elderly lady, diagnosed with six months to live.

She treated it as a six-month party. Smoked like a chimney, drank like a sailor. Ate what she wanted to, stayed up all night watching TV if she felt like it. Loaded up a car with three other old ladies to gamble at the bingo hall. Often came wobbling back home from the bar in the evenings, leaning on every second or third car to regain her balance.

To my knowledge, she tried all the vices except men. I think she lasted a bit more than six months, and finally bought it in the bar. When the ambulance came for her, I expect she left with a smile on her face.

However, my family cannot legally feed my corpse to the gators.

I was told singular is "panino".

And I feel this is relevant...

Danny: Large black coffee.

Barista: Do you mean a Venti?

Danny: No, I mean a large.

Barista: Venti is large.

Danny: No, Venti is twenty. Large is large. In fact, Tall is large and Grande is Spanish for large. Venti is the only one that doesn’t mean large. It’s also the only one that’s Italian. Congratulations, you’re stupid in three languages.

if it follows latin, it's alumnus-alumni... which also assumes panini are male.

...or just following grammatical gender, yes?

I took Latin in high school. Most of what I remember is "Femina est in villa," "vitula eligans sanctus," and "obscuri oculi." That's about it, other than the god-awful agony of conjugating that ancient garble.

I was going to try and pick up some Latin by reading something from the Loeb Classical Library, which has the original and the translations facing each other.

I settled on the bit of Plutarch's Lives which covers Sulla (I find him an interesting character).

Book arrives, I'm all ready to dig in...

Plutarch wrote in Greek.

So, my Latin is still pretty much limited to "wow... in English, that's a very bad word for the hoo-ha".

Today I learned China suddenly has 20,000,000 extra women.

They had been previously hidden from the government due to China's draconian family planning policy.
