Will a local Apple Store...

install a new/replacement into your MacBook Pro.
I figured since they were authorized dealers that it wouldn't void your warranty that way. How much do you think they would charge?

They have to have a Apple Authorized Repair Specialist there to replace stuff and not void the warranty.
It's quite expensive to get certified, so not all authorized dealers have them (Most Apple stores don't actually)

This is the biggest problem I have with CompUSA closing-they supposedly did this sort of thing for about $30 (plus the drive if you bought it from them). Now I'll have to find out which of the local Authorized Repair Specialists in the area is affordable for this sort of thing.

They don't do that at my Apple store... they can only install Apple parts and items.

Swapping out your hard drive or replacing RAM in a MB/MBP isn't too difficult; you could probably do it on your own.

They will not change out a hard drive or replace/upgrade ram on anything other than a current model machine, and then will only do it if you purchase Apple branded parts, which would be a service part. Obviously, it's much cheaper to do it yourself.

The MB is easy. I thought replacing the MBP hd is harder and voids your warranty.

It IS harder, and technically it does void your warranty (the drive in an MBP is not a "user servicable" part). If you do the job well, it wouldn't be noticed, so you might sneak it by.

Nope... the Apple Stores won't install any 3rd party components to a Mac. In fact, the only thing they will install is the bloated-priced Apple RAM.
Check out the Apple Authorized Service Providers in your area. One of the biggest advantages we have is that we'll install 3rd party hard drives, RAM, even setup your BootCamp/VM. Apple Stores are VERY rigid as to what they will/won't do, as us AASP's will cater to your needs.

I heard you can bring your own RAM/HDD, ask them to open it at the AppleStore (for a small fee); then you install the part on the spot.
Correct me if I was wrong.

If an Apple Genius did that they'd be in big trouble.
Apple is big on the whole in-warranty, Apple blessed components only. Not to mention, Apple would have to support the 3rd party component installed if they knowingly condoned an upgrade like that.
If the machine is in-warranty it's very rigid -- however, out-of-warranty is a whole 'nother topic. If you brought in your 4 year old QuickSilver G4 and wanted upgraded RAM, Hard drive, or Optical Drive -- I have a whole plethora of good 3rd party options I can suggest.
The biggest factor is, once you work on someone's computer you have to support the repair after the fact. Apple warrants their work on Apple known-good parts -- unknown 3rd party parts are a crap-shoot and Apple doesn't want to accept responsibility for them.

That is incorrect. As has already been pointed out, Apple will not do any work they can not guarantee. That's due to liability/legal issues.
