I have a 24" Intel iMac (white) and recently have had problems with spinning "beach balls" with opening windows and programs, crashing with Flash programs and watching videos (like on youtube), and general slowing of the computer.

I reinstalled OS X.5 and no improvement. I ran disk utility and it read the SMART status as verified. Onyx said the SMART status was normal, but a 3rd party utility called SMART utility 1.2 said the drive is failing.

Would a failing hd make my iMac act this way?

I know I've asked this before, but if I bought an internal HD/Superdrive could I bring it into an apple store to get replaced. (My superdrive is also shooting craps) I'm out of warranty anyway, and there are no service centers near me.

Your hard drive is dying. Back up and replace it now.

Apple stores will certainly replace your drives...for a fee.

Thanks.

The hard drive is SATA, right? (And not IDE.)

Yes, 3.5" SATA.

If you have AppleCare they should replace both under warranty.

Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't buy Applecare for it.
