Just got an email saying .mac bookmarks are dead in the water.

I use this feature daily from my office computer. Lets me have my personal bookmarks and my work bookmarks together but separate. to Apple.

It is dead. MobileMe will not make up for it. It works on the iphone and I can copy over my bookmarks manually to my work computer but it was so easy to use .mac bookmarks.

Oh, I see what you mean. The web based bookmarks. I thought you were talking about Mac to Mac bookmark synching.

Dear .Mac member:

As you may know, your .Mac subscription is being upgraded to MobileMe, Apple's new Internet service for your Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, and PC. This includes a new way to manage bookmarks across your computers and even push them over the air to your iPhone and iPod touch.

As part of the transition to MobileMe, web access to your .Mac Bookmarks will end in July 2008 and you will no longer be able to access or update your bookmarks at mac.com. Mac-to-Mac sync will not be affected.

To avoid losing bookmarks saved on .Mac, please sync them with your Mac before June 30. This will ensure that MobileMe can keep your bookmarks in sync going forward. Here's how.

For more information on the transition, please visit the MobileMe FAQ.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

The .Mac Team

Except you need to install that and the IT peeps at work are paranoid and it's near-impossible to get anything useful installed without a congressional hearing.

Wait, I'm confused now. It's the Web bookmarks that are being affected here, which is what del.icio.us offers. If we're talking about Mac-to-Mac synching, MobileMe will still do that. With MobileMe and DeliciousSafari, won't you have the same features you had with .Mac? (I'm not a .Mac subscriber, but that was my impression.)

No you don't.

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking website -- the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too. On del.icio.us, you can use tags to organize and remember your bookmarks, which is a much more flexible system than folders.

All you need is a browser and an internet connection.

Well, not officially on the homepage, but it is in the FAQ:

Are any other .Mac features affected?
As part of this transition to MobileMe, some features are being discontinued: Web access to bookmarks (bookmark sync between your Macs and/or PCs is still supported), iCards, .Mac slides, and support for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther sync.

I'm actually most bugged about iCards. If you go to hallmark or whatever you have to deal with overly obnoxious animated musical cards. I just want to send a simple message and iCards fits the bill wonderfully. Bugger that it's going away.

I hadn't realized that about delicious. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the clarification.

Wow, Apple, that's just plain stupid.

Bookmark syncing was a great feature. How hard can it be to port this to MobileMe ?

Bookmark syncing still works.

It's accessing them online from any web browser that's going away.

Ok, still, this was a very useful feature. Publishing them on .Mac to be able to access them from public computers is very useful.

And don't tell me that's hard to implement. Sounds like something a 1st year computer science student could slap together in half a day.

I have no idea why they might have cancelled the feature.

Possible security issues, perhaps?

Perhaps their research indicated that nobody was using the feature.

I never did subscribe to .Mac, but this feature was one of those that made me look and consider it.

Well, too bad for MobileMe...

Yesterday I downloaded the new Firefox 3, and when finished, I was prompted to look at some plugins they are offering. Lo and behold, there is Foxmarks -- does exactly what the Bookmarks feature did/does in .mac. Syncs your bookmarks to a space on the web for access from any computer! I know this is not Safari, but for those who use Firefox, it is a great idea. I used Bookdog to sync my Safari and Firefox bookmarks, then synced them to Foxmarks and all is well!

Bookmark syncing between Safari and Internet Explorer will work with mobileme, so your Foxmarks comment does not apply. What has been removed is the web based bookmarks feature.

No, foxmarks are web-based -- just like the old .mac bookmarks were available on the web from any computer.

I am actually going to miss .mac slides a LOT. I had about 5 family members computers in different states linked up to get pictures as their screen saver. Oh well....thanks a lot Apple.

Actually, the wireless sync in MobileMe is functionality I have wanted much more-
