currently, I've got my mac mini in the living room hooked up to my tv with my external drive with all my music and video files attached to the mini.

I want to listen to music in my room so I have been mounting the external drive attached to the mini and listening to music on my macbook but this is -painfully- slow. so slow that I beach ball every time I want to change song or look at a different playlist.

would it be unhealthy for my iPod to keep it connected to my laptop when I am not walking around and listening to my music off the iPod through iTunes on the macbook? would the constant use wear it out faster?

Constantly? Perhaps. A healthy amount shouldn't harm it though. If you're just using it about the same amount as you would if it were not connected, I don't think it would be a problem. The better to question to ask is why is your MacBook so slow?

I have no idea. possibly because I am keeping the itunes library on the external drive, and when the external is plugged into the mini in the other room, the constant reading and writing over wireless slows it down tremendously?

Uh, yes, loading your songs over the wireless will cause a major slowdown.
