That I will be leaving the MacNN community with this being my last post. I had fun here, and I would love to stick around and debate more but due to personal reasons and circumstances I wont be able to. Hope every one takes care, friends and foes. I might come back in the future. I just dont know yet. Bye every one.

Every now and again, people will announce their departure from MacNN. I doubt it's a joke.

Assuming the circumstances you speak of are not the most joyous ones - I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will improve very soon. Best of luck to you!

I just received a PM from another VERY well-known and well-loved member that he is leaving also.

It's sad.

What's going on around here?

Athens, we all wish you the best of luck and wish you'd stay.

Oh, you'll notice when he doesn't post anymore.

Just give it a week or so and look around. His silence, er - absence, will be deafening.

I know, I'm so ashamed of my post count.

I just was curious as to who was leaving.

In Canada? XYZ what? Do you think I'm someone else?

edit: he did say "flooding the forums" not leaving the forums, thus I was confused.

But hey, life goes on.

Yeah, MacNStein, it's him.

Nice guy, too.

I'd feel just as bad if you left.

I'm not saying who it is because our hope is that he won't leave.

Secondly, if he wanted everyone to know, he'd be telling you himself.

It's no fun being in the inner circle unless you can let people know that there is an inner circle. It's also part of inner circle protocol to let other people know that they are deemed unworthy of inner circle status. Now it is considered untoward to just simply berate people for not being included in the inner circle, as that may cause resentment and make people not stay awake at night, posting into the wee hours to compile a sufficient post count or crank out a particulary witty or insightful post that gain them recognition and acceptance into the inner circle. The best way to accomplish lording inner circle status over the huddled masses is to play 'I've got a secret'. Then all the other inner circle people can post knowingly, and make some suitably vague statement like "Oh yes. I was shocked and dismayed!" and perhaps "But can you blame him?".

A clever ploy, acting like you know of what the inner circle speaks of, hoping someone will give up a telling bit of information, but inner circles, if they are worth their salt, are wise to this. Surely any member of the inner circle would fall for such a pretense would quickly, and brutally I might add, find themselves excluded from the circle. It would be devestating. These are the two ways inner circles maintain power: by making people long to be included and by making those included fearful of exclusion. It is a savage world, that of the inner circle. Not for the timid, to be sure.

And yah, I'm not part of the flipping inner circle either! Dammit!
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

There are a lot of reasons someone might not be able to continue being part of this community (yes, it is one). I can think of a few that have nothing to do with prison. Military service. Seminary. Attending a college that requires students to live on campus and does not provide Internet connections.

From Athens' tone, I don't think that either college or seminary attendance are the answer. And since Athens didn't say what his reasons were, it's probable that he wants to keep them private.

Athens, I hope that whatever your reasons for leaving, you are successful and stay safe.

Can anyone link me to a university in North America that does not have internet access.

Someone with a flair for drama who thinks their departure will matter. Let's see who's done this kind of crap. Off the top of my head: iWrite, Cash, Lerk, that fat chick who delivered pizza, and MikeM. Out of all of them the only one who wasn't being a little drama queen was Mike who had some serious issues. And the rest, how many of them actually left?

I almost put a very snide remark here, dealing with the impossibility of linking to a school that did not have Internet access, but I thought better of it. I'm trying to be good here.

There are thousands of schools all over the continent; some large, some small. Not all small schools have the resources to provide Internet access to their students, whether free of charge or not. No, I can't give you an example right now, but this is one possibility, which is all I meant.

Another valid reason to leave the forums is that the wife found out how much time he's spending in here, and has threatened to divorce if he visits MacNN again.

Perhaps I haven't been here long enough, but I don't remember the "fat chick who delivered pizza." As for the others you mentioned, all of them, in some form or another, came back at some point, even MikeM.

The question that remains then is whether or not you let all the "important" people know that you were leaving - via PM including a post scriptum along the lines of:
  • "Sshhhh, don't tell anyone I'm leaving - it's a secret. But feel free to mention that someone important is leaving."
?

If they didn't supply internet access you think they'd have a "link". There are hundreds of small colleges in Michigan. Many with dozens or a couple hundred students.

This person if NOT a drama queen.

And the message was a "heads up" kind of thing. A "Hey man, won't be seeing me on here, but let's keep in contact" kinda thing.
