I had a couple of pre-production samples of those things. Not the most comfortable handset to try and pin between your head and shoulder. The pad-printed stripes scratched-off pretty easily, too.

We would do very bad...things...to Nermal in creative sessions. We couldn’t help ourselves. Such a natural target.

I think Nermal is an excellent example of working on different levels for kids and adults, because it’s not the typical one where it’s just a joke above a kid’s head. Instead, kids and adults have viscerally different reactions to the character.

I hope they replaced the lost shipment with a crate of Chester A. Arthur phones.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

We took great pains to not gender Nermal, too. Not out of any sort of social awareness, necessarily. It was just that we could never decide, so we just left it alone. The character worked really well like that.

I certainly didn’t recall a gender. Google gave me that.

Edit: oh wait... I edited the gender out when I wrote that last post. An earlier draft referred to Nermal as “him”, courtesy of Google.

WEIRD. I always thought Nermal was a girl - eyelashes and exposure on Garfield and Friends probably did it for me.

My guess was female, both because the eyelashes, and associating “cute” with “female”, but the name is decidedly not female.

When I was forced to assign a gender, I couldn’t do it myself. So, 100% success with me.

Arlene was the token female. You could tell because she is pink, wears ridiculous lipstick and has horrible luck choosing boyfriends.

Don’t forget Liz the vet. The other token female with ridiculous lipstick.
