Now that the shuffle is out and hanging around peoples necks I was wondering what I would do with the headphones when not in use. Looks like I found a hand and cool solution:

A bit overpriced at $10 for a molded piece of plastic that probably costs $.05? I think so. You can cut a piece of cardboard to make the same thing.

Would it hurt the cable to be wound around such a small object?
A process known as distributed computing helped map the human genome.

Now it's being used to find cures for cancer, ALS, alzheimer's and other diseases.

You can help by running a piece of software in the background. It's easy, free, and fun!

I don't think so as it is round.

But adding this rubber/plastic thing will weight down your headphones from your ears, might not be comfortable...

I would like to see some kind of a wind-up case like many earbuds use nowadays. I had a pair ot Sennheiser MX500s (great little earbuds btw, slightly better than the iPod ones) and they came with a wind-up case. It was SO convenient.

i use the plastic strap like 'ties'....u know the ones?..you loop it to tie it tight...and once it's tied...the only way to set it loose is to cut it....of course you have to be careful not to cut your headphone wire.....works fine for me.....

It's not exactly round. It's a little flat and 'oval-ish'.

I have the white one, but I think the black's the nicer looking one of the lot.

It's made in Singapore

Cool! Ordered 2. Black for me, pink for her. 3.99 a pop here in the UK, (free p+p from www.ipodx.co.uk). This small piece of plastic is going to take a fair bit of annoyance out of may day

I am rather pissed off they would include something like this on a professional site:

"i like mine alot, and i think that when i get my next set of earbuds ill use the smartwrap as opposed to the geigh cases they come with..."

And not the fact that "ALOT" is spelled wrong.

That is pretty unprofessional to have on a site. Did you send them a comment about it?

I wonder if I could make one of these... hmm...

I am talking to one of the PR people as they are sending one to the gay magazine I work for to review it. This looks rather bad for them considering who they are sending it to.

I will tell them about it.

if you can't wrap it up neat and tidy on your own, you've got problems (read as: you are a retard). paying ten bucks to geek up even more is ridiculous.

99% of people would call you a retard for recommending Monster products yet have the nerve to lecture about price.

$10 is double the real price... what is up with that. You can purchase them for $5 for any color, straight from the vendor.

Oh... final comment about winding up headphones. This was designed for headphones, typically for studio headphones when the wire is freaken 9 feet long.

It was a great concept and beautiful design executed by a student I believe.

The remote plus headphones for the iPod make the thing so stupidly long it really makes me wonder. This would be a great solution.

What's your review of that thing? I ordered a couple last week.

Does it add to the weight of the headphones? Or is it negligible?

It does add some weight to the headphones because it will be hanging off the end of the iPod shuffle.

Whether it's noticeable or not, I think it's more of a personal preference thing, so YMMV.

At least the cable won't be too long after using the Smartwrap.

Edit: The website says it's 0.2oz or 5.67grams

I got mine on Friday along with my shuffle.

It is thinner than I pictured but it is probably all the better as it is lighter.

If I attach it below the shuffle I cannot feel the weight at all as it is being held up by the lanyard.

I recommend it highly as the iPods earphone cord is so long.

The main reason I got it though is because I will always have my shuffle on me in my pocket or around my neck so I need something to keep the headphones neat in my pocket.

The Smart Wraps can twist up your cord so you have to use it. Nice idea but needs work.

It twists your headphone cord so they stay all twisted up even when you're not using. Like a phone cord.

Ok, got it.

Since my cord length is too long anyway I don't see why this would be a problem. But I don't have a Smartwrap yet and you do so I guess I'll find out when mine arrives.

But it seems a small price compared to the alternative of having to un-knot the headphones everytime I want to use them (which is everyday).

Along with better sound and greater comfort, the Sonys have an extension so you can adjust the cord. Nice when you don't need all that length.

True, and I like my Fontopias, but the cord is way too short w/o the extension and way too long w/ it, at least for me.

Yeah, it's $5 at the manufacturer's site, but then you have to pay another $5 for shipping.

I got 3 shipped to Canada for $7.50 each (free shipping), from Aiya Micro.

Works great, although the cord keeps itself coiled up even after removing the SmartWrap. But it's still a heluvalot better than an uber long cord.

EDIT:

Aiya is now selling them for $6.99 with free shipping.

Awesome, I keep my iPod in my jean pocket and the cord gets wrapped around my ipod 5 or 6 times and is still more than long enough to reach my ears. I can have my headphones on and my iPod sitting on the floor without any trouble, and I'm 6'1"...who needs a 6 foot headphone cord?

I'm debating between the SmartWrap and the earPod. The earPod doesn't look as good but it does provide a storage area for the earphones when not in use.

So, are you cyber-stalking SHoS?

Did you really have to revive an iPod accessory thread that had been dead for 5 weeks just to post this?

Funny... Before seeing this thread I just ordered the three pack (black, white and clear) from Dr. Bott for $12.

I think it's a cool product and serves a real need.

After getting a great deal on my iPod photo 40GB I've ended up spending way too much on cool accessories. I never thought I'd turn into such an iPod addict. Its great!

That's the whole point. MUCH more money in accessories than in the actual iPod. At best, the iPod is only marked up a few percent (from the retailer's perspective). Accessories are often marked up several hundred percent.

Yep, simple but very functional. I suspect knockoffs will start showing up for $3 though in a few months...
