I just got my dual G5 with optical audio out for 5.1 surround sound, and am trying to decide which speaker system to get. Apple offers the Logitech and Klipsch speakers at the Apple Store as custom G5 orders, and has the Klipsch speakers at some retail stores.

Any recommendations as to the better model? I did some searches for reviews on Google, but never found anything head to head, and each model has a decent fan base it seems.

do not get the gmx's
the z-680s are much better
if you want to compare klipsch to logitech compare the z680s with the promedia 5.1s

or wait a month or two for the promedia ultras

I have the 680s
Had em hooked up to my PB before my G5 arrived. Must say the sound is SO much more clear and impressive coming from the digital out. I'm more than happy with the logitechs.
Remember, optical speakers volume can't be controlled with the macs volume slider. You have to adjust the volume on the speakers themselves. This is where the logitechs control pod thing comes in handy.

Thanks, I ended up ordering the z680s from Dell, of all places. $299 - $29.95 discount and free shipping. Should have em at the end of the week!

I have klipsch GMXes, love them, and while they do "hiss", they only do that on the analog input. *shrug* they weren't meant to be used with analog anyway

The other thing is klipsch GMX 5.1s can be had for $140-150 while the 680s cost damn near twice as much. They don't look as cool, and from what I hear, don't sound a hell of a lot better.

Oh, and mine don't hiss when muted
Aloha

If possible cancel that order. You overpaid IMHO. You can get the logitech z5500s for right around that price (under $300). They are an improved version of the Z680s. Don't get me wrong, the 680s are an awesome set of speakers (and defintely better than the GMXes); however, if you're going to spend that much get the z5500s which are newer, have tighter bass (due to an enlarged 10" sub), and more refined sats.

Considering he posted that about 15 months ago, it might be a bit late to cancel.

OMG... who the heck brought that back from the dead. I was wondering why someone said something about waiting for the ultras (since they have been out for some time now).

Good call man... might be a little late for a return!

Yeah I didn't catch that lol. And back then, the GMXes were a bit too much because they were almost as much as the logitechs...

Now the logitechs are like $250 and the klipschs 150, and I'll take a "slight difference' Hehehhheh...

Yeah, I remember now! THis thread was one of the few I read and realized very very few people on mac sites haves these speakers so I bought them sight unseen and opinions unheard
Aloha
