I'm looking to set up an old iMac as a NAT, gateway, router, etc. and as a server. I'm looking to find a way to have 2 wired network connections simultaneously. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of the following:

Cheap USB ethernet adapters that work in OS X
FireWire ethernet adapters (do these even exist?)
Or some other way to get a second ethernet interface on an old iMac.

I have 2 iMacs that I am considering using for this project. One is a rev B 233 (no firewire, obviously) and the other is a slot loading iMac with FireWire (and airport slot, but I want the computer to have 2 ethernet ports, not airport).

Thanks.

You could fudge it and not use a DHCP server on the iMac. You could still have it set up as a router. You would just need a switch, and you would use static local IP addresses. This would require extra Unix fudging, though.

With the iMac with built-in FireWire you should be able to use the built-in FireWire to network with other FireWire machines (using TCP/IP over FireWire, assuming Mac OS X 10.3 or higher) whilst simultaneously using the Ethernet port to network with other Ethernet equipped machines.

I would think a cheap router can be had for little more than a USB-to-Ethernet device.
