I am new to mac and dont know if am just making a stupid mistake.
I put some movies on a computer and then decided to get rid of them, but after i drag the files to the trash Finder still shows that the memory is still being used but the file doesnt show. Please help me, i am running out of room on my HD.

Did you empty the trash? Until you do so, the item is still on disk, occupying space (but also giving you the opportunity to remove it from the trash in case you change your mind).

Also, to empty the trash while you're in the Finder, go up to Finder in the menu and select Empty Trash from the pull-down. It'll probably prompt you to make sure you are sure about throwing away the stuff, and then it'll do it. For future reference, the Trash in your dock should look like it has items in it if it's full, while it'll look empty if it's...well...empty.

My guess is that it just hasn't updated the numbers yet. If you really want to force it to do so try getting info on your hard drive, or logging out and back in. If the trash is empty though, it's removed the files.

the trash shows its empty but when i am in finder it shows me that the disk space is still used, as if i didnt put the files in the trash. now i am also seeing that memory is slowing going away when i dont even do any thing. Ive got less than 100 megs left when i should have at least 15 gigs!

As others have pointed out, Finder (the OSX version) is the one who is stupid.

While that will definitely work, it may be a bit drastic.
Relaunching Finder (cmd-opt-esc, etc.) should do the trick.
Simpler yet, create a new folder in the same directory
where the erroneous size is being displayed. Then cmd-delete
the new folder (watch out for that other Finder list view bug!),
and the correct size will be recalculated.
