i have been attempting to burn some pictures for a friend and my damn burner has not worked. i tried with Toast Titanium 5.1.3 as well as with apples utilities, but nothing has worked. i keep getting error message 6? anyone have any suggestions?

I'm attempted in OS X as well as OS 9, nothing seems to work. I think this may be the first time i have burned a data CD since OS X 10.1.5, but that shouldn't affect OS 9 performance, but its also the first time i have burned a Data CD since updating Toast Titanium to 5.1.3 for X.

I'm not planning to download another 10MB+ file from Roxio on my 56k dialup to get to 5.1.4, especially since others have had problems with it, and some saying that its not a final version. Any help ... ?

- keeping it cool for now

oh yeah, and Spheric Harlot , i appreciate your suggestion on changing the subject, etc., but if you can't help, don't respond.

Luckily, I was only having problems under OS X, so it looks like I really can't help you in this case.

I assume you are using the built in burner in your imac 600?

When you say that you cant burn the image files, can you please describe in detail exactly what is happening. ie the specific error message and what is going wrong...

Its just that it could be a number of things. I personally and running toast 5.1.1 in osx without any troubles... HOWEVER when I ran toast 5.1.1 using a different burner *an external one* I did have some difficulties.

So yeah, I think I might be able to help you, but Ill need some specific info. Please post the details of the problem here and we'll try and work it out

Have a great day

finally someone who can help and someone who posts something worth while, i appreciate it. here is what happens; about 30 pics = 10MB put into a disk image (.dmg maybe?).

while in OS X, i insert a blank CD and a window comes up asking me what i want to do with the disk, how i want to prepare the disk. i say i want to use the disk for data, so it does whatever it does. i drag the disk image to the disk and it attempts to burn the cd. it presents me with an Error 6 and something else. i would specifically tell you what the error message says, however i hate to waste more CD-r's. So i thought maybe i wasn't doing it correctly. i attempted with Toast titanium 5.1.3. it starts to burn and brings up the same error, except with the toast icon instead of a finder image. so i rebooted in OS 9, tried it exactly the same way, first drag and drop, secondly with Toast Titanium and i got the same error. i'm using Imation 1X - 16X Compatible 700MB/80 Min. CD-r's. i think thats everything.

and yes, built in burner, Toast reads it as Mats-h-i-ta CD-RW.

update: i just tried it once again from the finder and i have posted pictures of what happens.

Preparing the CD

The file was dragged to the CD and "copied" and now this ...

Burning the Disk

The Error Box, it ejects the CD as this pops up

I hope these help .. thank You

Ok Proudest monkey, thats for the extra info.

1 more question.

Does the machine appear to complete the operation other than the error message? Ie does it actually attempt to burn the files?

If it does, have you tried to read the cd after the error occurs? I was getting the same error for every session/track I wrote using my external usb cdrw with my ibook in osx on toast 5.1.1, however, when i clicked ok, it would continue on normally, and the cds actually worked fine! Weird hey? The only bummer was if you were burning an audio cd you had to hit ok after very track. Not fun with a 4x burner I can assure you (burning audio at 2x).

Ok, first thing first. Always open toast prior to inserting a blank disc. When you get that message asking you to format the disk, click ignore and let toast do the work. Always safer that way. Toast is much more reliable than the cd burner in built software.

Now, assuming that you dont have a hardware issue such as a faulty cdrw, Im thinking the best think for you to do is to refresh your os. By that I mean grab the original osx disk, boot from the cd and reinstall osx and classic (make sure your data is backed up). More often that not this type of error is a corruption issue.

One other thing Id like to know is, did this just happen recently or has it always happened?

Get back to me on these issues and if you are game, try the reinstall of mac os and see how you go. Either way post here and we will try and work through this.

Ok Im off to play some warcraft 3. Good luck

well ... i don't know why, but i have never put a newly made coaster back in my computer, i should try that. i can't right now bc i am at work, however i will when i get home. it does attempt to burn the file onto the disk, but after a short period of time, it brings the error message up and ejects the CD at the same time. i have thought about refreshing the system software, however then i would have to reinstall 10.1.5, but i was really okay at 10.1.3 so i guess thats no big deal, i will try that this weekend. This hasn't always happened, it might be coincidence it may not be, but this is the first time i have attempted to burn a data disk since upgrading to 10.1.5, i think a coincidence. i will try it again with toast and with clicking ignore on the preperation dialog box. thanks for all of your knowledge.

It seems to be universal. That is it doesn't matter which application I'm using it just won't write to the CD. My system is almost identical to yours (I've added an extra 256 Meg ram PC100-322S).
Attempting to burn data CD gives me the error 6. and burning from iTunes (either MP3's or music CD's) gives me an error 7000+ (I forget the exact number).
The CD's remain blank (at least neither my iMac nor my wife's windoze machine can detect any files on them).
I hope that this information is of some help.
I'll keep you posted.

When did you update your system?
Just as an FYI. I attempted to use disc burner in 9.2.2, but when I inserted a blank disc 10.1.5 asked how I wanted it formatted. I never was able to get back to 9.2.2 and now I have a blank disc stuck in the iMac. Fun!

update : i downgraded to OS X 10.1.2 to see what would happen and as it turned out, i could burn a data CD but not an Audio CD.

Pic 1 - Error Burner Audio CD with 10.1.2

Pic 2 - saved on CD-R through Toast Titanium 5.1.3 (this is after Toast burned the CD, verified the CD, ejected the CD, then i reinserted to find it on the CD.

For the Audio CD:

I Prepared CD in Finder for iTunes Audio CD

Click Burn CD

After 2 seconds the error occured

For Data Disk:

data disk through toast titanium worked perfectly

On a side note: my CDRW drive is very loud when a CD-R is inserted, i do not remember it being this loud in the past.

hope these help.

i briefly looked at the knowledge base article, but all it was confirming was that the problem existed, which i am well aware of. basically it is telling me that its the cd-r's that i am using, so i guess i should buy some news. however, i had OS X and 9 on seperate partitions, but i have erased both and made it 1 partition to house both OS's. As soon as i finish the updating from an external HD i am borrowing i will give an update here to what is happening in X and 9 with itunes and toast titanium.

Ive bought some brands before that just font work at all. I find if I stick with the good ones, like tdk, verbatim, and emtec (otherwise known as basf) I have no troubles with my burner, but some of the smaller brands seem to fail on any drive, which is a worry.

i briefly looked at the knowledge base article, but all it was confirming was that the problem existed, which i am well aware of. basically it is telling me that its the cd-r's that i am using, so i guess i should buy some news. however, i had OS X and 9 on seperate partitions, but i have erased both and made it 1 partition to house both OS's. As soon as i finish the updating from an external HD i am borrowing i will give an update here to what is happening in X and 9 with itunes and toast titanium.

Which brand and type of cd-r's were you using, if you dont mind me asking?

Ive bought some brands before that just font work at all. I find if I stick with the good ones, like tdk, verbatim, and emtec (otherwise known as basf) I have no troubles with my burner, but some of the smaller brands seem to fail on any drive, which is a worry.

I'm using Memorex which has not given me any problems in the past & never fails on my wife's windoze machine.
