Welcome to the MacNN Forums! Yes, you can network any PC (or Unix, or Linux...) computer to any Mac. It's incredibly simple. Buy an inexpensive router (here in the States, you can find them for less than $50 every day, and often for less than $30 if you look around a little). Connect the network port on the PC to one of the LAN ports on the router, and the network port of the Mac to another LAN port (usually figuring this out is very simple-just look at the markings on the router). Viola! You've "networked" the two computers. You "can" network the two without a router, but you really want that router-it makes things MUCH simpler.

Sharing files takes a little extra work. You have to designate the files or folders you want to share on the PC-right click on the folder you want to share, select "Sharing" and make the appropriate selections (password, name the shared folder will use on the network, etc.) You also have to tell the Mac that you want to use Windows file sharing. That's all under Sharing Preferences. The final step is to actually connect the two computers by telling them where to look for files. On the PC you go to Network Places and choose the "Add New Network Place" wizard at the top of the left-hand pane; this will walk you through setting up the connection. On the Mac, you open Finder and select "Go to Server" and enter the PC's computer and share name.

Here's a pretty good tutorial on how to do this.

Glad to have you aboard!

Well, we didnt end up needing to buy a router or anything. The other night my girlfriend and i decided to see if it would work by just hooking up the computers by an ethernet cable and it worked! My macbook name popped up on her screen and all i did was enable windows sharing. ^__^
