Hello,

Is anyone else experiencing dropped PPP connections using their Pismo? I never had this problem with my old 8500, using the same ISP (Earthlink, Boston access number). Every once in a while the connection will die, seemingly at random, sometimes when I have been idle for a few minutes, sometimes in the middle of network activity.

(It isn't Idle timeout either -- I have that set to 30 minutes.)

I'm thinking it is either the Pismo builtin modem or the Remote Access that ships with OS 9. Again, I had no problems using the same ISP and phone line on my old OS 8.6 8500. Anyone else having problems with Pismo's builtin modem/Remote Access?

TIA,

Ben

i've only used the modem on rare occasions since i've got my pismo powerbook, but i remember that when i did use it, i frequently got "dropped connections" when dialing up to aol---sometimes every ten minutes or so.....it was really frustrating.

i was never using "remote access"--so it wouldn't be that.....

i also never connected at more than 28800, which sucked, but i'm told that could be due to the crappy phone lines i was using....

I've had no problem with the modem per se, but HAVE had problems getting access to/staying connected to Earthlink, using a local Manhattan #. I use both Airport and the built-in modem to connect depending on where I am. Both occasionally drop. It seems that for me at least the problem is Earthlink. During peak hours it seems to happen more frequently. It doesn't happen at all when I connect to my office network remotely.

Try getting a noise filter for the line. You can pick up a pretty reliable surge protector with one of the built in for about $25.00

OK, So the consensus is that the problem is either with a bad telephone line or is Earthlink's end. The fact still remains that everything was huncky-dory before, using my old 8500 and Global Village platinum modem. My guess is that the Pismo builtin modem is inferior to my old Global Village one in this regard. Maybe I will pick up a serial port adapter and try the old modem...

Thanks for everyone's replies.

many times a different modem script will do the deed

there are so many, i guess you should first try the Modem Puppet Show (honest), see versiontracker.com

also see these posts for more links to modem scripts and much info: http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum5/HTML/001583.html http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum5/HTML/001691.html http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum5/HTML/001734.html http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum5/HTML/001974.html http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Forum5/HTML/001982.html http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/Foru...ML/000383.html

many people have reported success using one of the scripts available here: http://www.taniwha.cwc.net/

they are named as being for PB G3 internal but will work with most any Mac internal modem...
