This is probably old ground on this board, but I'm curious and I've never seen it brought up, so...

What is your occupation?

I'm interested to know how many of us, percentage-wise, do NOT have computer-centric careers.

I'm graduating in a month and am attempting to break into woodworking, funiture design, and/or furniture restoration, so no on-the-job computers for me.

Actually... they employ a LOT of graphic artists and.. well, email me. I am actually quite sure there are positions for someone of your talent. Willing to relocate to stoic and stuffy Mass, are we? Seriously, the Lab is a GREAT place to work.

I'm an electrical engineer for a large urban electrical distribution utility. One of my current internal titles is that of 'investment delivery team leader', which involves the administration of various business ventures between my company and other entities, such as the leasing of fibre optic assets to other companies.

My other duties mostly involve overseeing the development, revision and implementation of electrical standards and specifications for high voltage equipment and work procedures that minimize incidents of equipment failure and accidents to utility personell. In a nutshell, my job entails maintaining and improving the process to safely ship electrons in bulk to end users.

Freelance Web production guy, 85% HTML, CSS, and whatnot, 15% graphics. The market sucks these days like how. Had a fulltime gig, and the co. went belly-up in the 2000 crash.
Did a bunch of banner ads for a bank (who are keeping me somewhat busy these days) last week; I thought the ads weren't that great, but they apparently loved them! So there ya go. There's only so much one can do with a small canvas

I gotta re-do my site one of these days: I've been going through old backup CDs to weed out the crap I can throw out, and found the first design ideas from November 1998! Oy...

Meantime I wanna hit up Maxelson for a move back to Bahstahn

I'd really like to go back to school for about 2 years to actually concentrate on the Design aspect, my skills and speed there are lacking. But the lack of cash and current fights with OSAP are keeping me away.

In an ideal world I'd go back to school fulltime for Industrial Design, something I should have done 10 years ago. Live and learn I guess. I wanna build neat things!

PS. Lerkfish, nice work there!

I recommend the joint HIGHLY. INCREDIBLE place to work. Good folks, lots of fun, big Mac population. Pay is good to really good, can't complain about the bennies, great atmosphere.
They do great DoD work here (that's DEFENSE, which is how I justify working for the military industrial complex... nice rationalization, that!).

My job title is ICT Technical Support Analyst. I work for the Education Client Services division of my local government office as part of a team of 10 support persons.

I'm the odd one out of the team though... the other people spend a large chunk of their time visiting 144 educational establishments (schools, nurseries, libraries, offices, community education sites etc) performing a range of reactive work (ie it used to work but doesn't work now), or doing planned work such as installations, upgrades, audits etc. I spend nearly my whole time in the office doing email administration (Symantec MailGear for now) for nearly 32,000 users (all our staff and students), doing day to day database admin for our Helldesk system (assyst Enterprise from Axios Systems - a V V good product that can do like everything!) and supplier liaison.

Except for this week and next, our schools are on their Easter holidays so we have tons of installations/reconfigurations to do. I did 10 laptop builds today with a couple of colleagues, tomorrow we're off to run some diagnostics on a batch of servers at one of our Secondary schools. Fun.

And since I network and fix/upgrade all the Macs in the office, I guess I'm also the network administrator.

thanks for the comments re: my work.
regarding tufte, I think he's sometimes too anal in regards to graphics as communication...for example, he thinks pie charts should never be shifted in 3 dimensions because it throws of the actual area....but I say no one can mentally calculate that area visually anyways, so go ahead and make it 3-D, just label it accurately.
But he approaches it from an academic perspective, and I from a communications perspective.

and I would love to work with some of you guys..though I'd rather just win the lottery...waits....yeah, that's gonna happen.

well, that's the one part of my site that is definitely under construction. I started to type in what I said at each slide, but since I'd done it extemporaneously during the slide show, I had no notes that I could easily transcribe for the site. I need to fix that, though...doh! I think at each slide I'll put (and here I said something really funny...audience laughs....I forget my place, look up at the slide...oh yeah! )

The Phoenix locator next to my name is wishful thinking. I have family in the Valley and have been trying to relocate for months! I'm actually in Kansas Shitty, Misery... I mean, Kansas City, Missouri.

Guess my 'secret' is out now, eh!?

To answer your question though... There is Tribal Gaming in Phoenix. There are 4 casinos in the market right now. I interviewed @ one to do promotions back around Christmas. It was more like a VFW hall with slot machines. I wanna move, but not that badly. Guess I just have to wait for the right opportunity.
