If you need it now as a work tool, then buy now.

I also second the notion "if you need stuff done now, get the PB now."

The PBs were recently updated so it's a good time to buy one.

If we keep waiting for "The Next Big Thing", we'll be waiting a long time.....

Here's another suggested page for the Buy now or buy later question:

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

It mostly looks at the product life cycle. When an Apple product hasn't been updated in a while (approaching end of life status), the status changes to "don't buy yet, updates coming soon".

The PBs are currently designated "Buy now - product recently updated".

Wow ... I hadn't realized that the G5 was approaching the end of a cycle. It seems so new and fresh.

The G5 iMacs are "new" and the current model is approaching end of cycle soon based on Apple product release cycle of 6 months. It's just gonna be a small speed bump and possibly some small architectural redesigns to cure the iMac G5 overheating.

MacRumors is usually looking at the average product update cycle. Usually the PBs have a 6 month upgrade interval. Before the current PBs came out in January 2005, the PB line was already 9 months between product updates and people were getting antsy praying for a G5 PB.

If the current trends stick, we should see new G5 iMacs soon.

Since the PBs were released in January, we could expect another PB release later in June (6 months) or September (9 months).

If you can't wait until June or September (or even later) then get the PB now.

They seem to be a swell bunch.

Jamito is right, the only reason to hold out on a Powerbook purchase is to await for the release of Tiger. Ohter than that now is the time to purchase a Powerbook considering that by now most of the bugs have figured out....

Does Apple every offer a free upgrade to recent purchasers. I just got a new Pb. If TIger comes out next month, might I get a free upgrade, or am I out of luck?

Always buy now !

if you see something that really rocks in the summer then
eBay the old one and get the new one.

My two cents,

You will have to pay full price, just like everyone else. It sucks, but that is the stance Apple has taken in the past, and it is likely to continue.

Buy now, the planet may be destroyed tomorrow by aliens...

How's that for justification?
