Hey,
Just decided to get a new Apple TV instead of a new DVD/BD player (one of no-doubt many people to be suckered in by the new lower price point). All's good, but I'd like to convert my existing DVDs, and at least have the option to watch other formats (XVid, DivX etc).
I've googled for a format converter, and there are several options, but they all cost money. Before I part with my cash, has anyone got any recommendations of what's good, or of what to avoid? Also if there's a free option I'd be interested to hear - but simplicity is my main priority. I don't want to run through a ten step Automator workflow while stitching together .VOB files every time I want to import a DVD.
Thanks for any advice!

It'll be cool when the iOS VLC gets loaded for a jailbroken iOS AppleTV (assuming we also get some way to upload to it). This will cut down on transcoding.

Yep, Handbrake works very well. You do need VLC installed also, as Handbrake relies on it for the encoding process.

Cool - thanks guys. Turns out I had Handbrake anyway, but hadn't tried it as I had some problem with it when I last used it to transcode videos for iPod Touch. Turns out it works fine for AppleTV purposes.
Cheers!
