Sounds like this will be the year we see mass-market availability of 8KTV and maybe a high end 16K set (or two).
Isn’t 16K overkill?

Yes, but from a pure tech standpoint beyond cinemas (and even then?) I cannot see how any normal consumer will notice 16K over 8 or even 4K.

I'm ok with a 720p TV. Seriously.

New technologies enable new applications. If the SciFi movies are right, we'll end up with homes, where entire walls are big screens. Hunger Games shows an example. Existing sets already reach 120 inches (3 meters). 16K is not unreasonable for a nature scene wall to look right.

The minute we tried to play multiplayer gaming and my "huge" tv was broken into 4 quadrants with tiny unreadable text, I wished for a bigger tv. Or a wall projector.

And also depends on the type of SciFi movie.

Supposedly Apple will make an appearance again. That ought to be interesting.

Unless they're using CES to reveal something new that no one saw coming, I'm not sure what returning buys them. Having a booth that just replicates what's in an Apple Store is pretty sure to draw negative reviews. Apple returning to CES after so many years would seem to require something special happening. Otherwise...yawns.

8K TVs have been available in every store in Japan for at least a year or two. Granted, they are pricey, but they are mass market items.

Yup. I think color gamut and fidelity is more important. 4K definitely noticeably looks better than 1080p, but to notice the difference between 4K and 8K, you really need to put your nose to the screen. And you need good source material.
