Hi everyone,

At work, a colleague of mine gave me an ol' 400MHz iMac (slot loading) G3 with Mac OS 9.2.2 for free. I am pretty excited, because I have a MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo 15.4" which is incapable of running some fun ol' Mac OS Classic applications that I miss and love and my PowerPC Macs are either a) sold -or- b) broken down. Anyway, on to my questions...

What is the latest version of iTunes for Mac OS 9? Most sources indicate it's 2.x, but Wikipedia (and we all know how reliable that is... ) claims it's 3.x...

What is the latest version of Quicktime for Mac OS 9? 6.0.3?

Where can I download the last version of Microsoft Internet Explorer for Mac OS 9? (Microsoft took it off their website...)

If it cannot be downloaded anywhere, or you have a better browser in mind... What would you recommend and where? I downloaded Netscape 7.x and iCab 3.x...

I may have more questions in the future...

Thanks!

Norm

2.x sounds right (although for some reason, the one in my Classic install is 1.1).

Indeed it is. And the last time I tried, it was still possible to find 6.0.3 on Apple's web site, although it was buried pretty well and required a bit of digging to find it.

Doesn't it come bundled with the OS 9 CD?

I recall iCab 2.x being pretty lean and swift on OS 9, but I don't have any experience with 3.x.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Internet Explorer 5.1.7 was on the Mac OS 9.2.1 CD I used... But I think there may be a later version...

Thanks for your help...

Any more insight (replies) is welcome though...

iCab 3 works great under Mac OS 9.

As for e-mail apps, PowerMail and SweetMail are both really good, being the former shareware and the later a free app.

Please note than iCab 3 is based on UNICODE, so you better tell iCab (Preferences) to use a given font instead of the websites choosing the fonts to use, so you would have the sites to look kind of a mess.

To give you some insight, this is how I tell iCab to deal with fonts…

I was a SoundJam fan before iTunes came out... :-p In fact, while iTunes was based off of SoundJam, I found SoundJam to be superior for a while and still miss some of it's features... :-p

I found it it was the last classic version of IE to come out, by the way. :-\

iTunes doesn't matter, I thought perhaps iTunes 3 would include AAC and iTunes sharing support-not surprised and disappointed, it doesn't...

Thanks for the help guys.

iTunes 4 was the first version to support AAC files. It had a green double note whereas iTunes 3 had a purple double note.

I use iCab 3 with OS 9 with no issues. I'm kind of in the same boat with the OP, I got a 333 MHz tangerine iMac in perfect condition for free over the summer. It's a fun little Mac to mess around with.
