I'm trying to sync the home folders of my laptop and desktop. I'm using ChronoSync with Leopard and everything works fine except for about 10 files, the two most important which don't sync are iCal and Address Book. The error message, which is posted below, says that it may be a permission issue. However, when I checked the permissions of each of those files, they all had Read & Write access for the user, and either No Access or Read Only for everyone. This seems to be normal so I'm confused as to why these files are not being copied. Also, when I try to manually drag the files from one computer to the other, I get the error message: The operation cannot be completed because the item "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" is in use. I get these messages even when I've quit Address Book and iCal. What needs to be done to get those files to sync properly?

One possible guess is it has to do with the group these files are in... but
it could be almost anything. Use Terminal to list both (or just look closer
in the ChronoSync window), for example:

ls -lo ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk
ls -lO ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk

First command is for pre-Leopard, second is for Leopard.
[i.e., it might be prudent to check the flags too.] Run the
appropriate version on both copies of the file and compare.

Terminal may not be mandatory, but it makes posting stuff
like permissions info a whole lot easier. And it does reveal
a bit more than Finder's "get info".

Here are the results of that command on 2 of the files in Leopard:

gbh$ ls -lO ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk
-rw-------@ 1 gbh staff - 2600960 Dec 11 02:25 /Users/gbh/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk
gbh$ ls -lO ~/Library/Application\ Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb
-rw------- 1 gbh staff - 651264 Nov 27 12:50 /Users/gbh/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb

I have had many problems with 10.5 and permissions. I did an an upgrade to 10.5 forma 10.4 computer, which is the source of all these issues. I had to run this terminal command:
sudo find / -group <username> -exec chgrp staff {} \;

This has properly assigned staff as a group to all the files my user has permissions set. Staff is the new admin group in leopard.

The warning: This is a sudo command and can royally messing things up if your computer is configured in some weird way. I would disconnect all network shares prior to executing. It does take a while to run (~15 minutes for me), as the find command means it is picking through your drive file by file.

Running that command as listed, returns
find: -group: gbh: no such group

And when I enter the command "groups", I get
staff _lpadmin admin

If staff is the new admin group, then should I substitute "admin" for "username" in your command? Also, don't the results of the "ls" command, show that the files in question are already in the staff group?

I disagree with what tinker posted.

First of all: staff is not "the new admin". It isn't any kind of admin.
It's the same old staff we had back in Jaguar and before (before Panther).

Second: if it's even necessary (as you can see, it wasn't for you), then
rather than change the inodes of possibly thousands of files, simply
add the group... as Apple suggests in: " kbdoc307128"

gbhgbh, I need to see both "HistoryIndex.sk" files listed (source and target).

I am also having the exact same problem using Chronosync to sync home folders from a MacBook Pro to a G5 iMac. Interestingly the sync FROM the MacBook Pro TO the iMac fails with this exact same permissions issue message, however a sync FROM the iMac TO the MacBook Pro works fine.

Not sure this sheds any valuable light, so far I'm stumped.

The files are open files. Close the files and run ChronoSync and the files should copy without error.

How do you close the files? I've tried quitting iCal and Address Book, the relevant apps, and still get the same problem.

I ran Activity Monitor on my G5 iMac and found that SystemUIServer is using AddressBook-v22...

This SystemUIServer is NOT running on my MacBook Pro and syncing FROM the iMac to the MacBook Pro works fine but not the other way.

Could this be the problem? If so what is the fix?
