Looking for USB Hub advice

Never have bought one, so I don't know jack about those nor understand why are that expensive. The hub would be attached to an aluminum iMac; it should work with several printers and scanners.

Not a big question here. Go with a "known brand" like Belkin. Plain old unpowered hubs are quite inexpensive-I have a couple, very portable hubs I got at Office Depot for less than $5 each-but powered hubs cost more because of both the cost of the power supply and the internals for poet management. I have a Belkin 7 port powered hub (5 on the back, 2 on top) that retails for $35 to $50; shop around for the best deal.
By the way, I use one of those unplowed, inexpensive hubs to connect two printers to my AirPort Extreme base, and when I finally decide on which USB hard drive to go with I'll use that hub to connect that to the base, too.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Since these printers and scanners I intend to connect come with its own power supply, it is safe to say that any unpowered hub would be OK; am I mistaken?

Yes, any cheapo unpowered hub should be fine. You really only need a powered hub for things like portable hard drives (though some work fine on unpowered hubs) and for connecting and charging high power devices, like any iDevice.

In theory, it will be fine. But powered hubs usually work as unpowered if the brick isn't plugged in. And you'll regret not having a powered hub the first time you plug a camera in.
