Over the summer I want to learn about databases and interfacing them with php... Can anyone recommend a good book? I already know some PHP and I can write some simple things trudging through the reference... But i'd like to know more... So if anyone has any solely PHP recommendations, I'd appreciate that too.

Thanks

i would spend some time over at www.sitepoint.com definately. i purchased their "build your own database driven website with php & mysql" and it was pretty good. not packed with tons of info, but more simplistic approach really.

spend some time over there and ask some on their boards, they will give you a better answer than here probably.

PHP and MySQL Web Development by Welling and Thomson, 2nd ed

Covers both PHP and MySQL in enough depth to get you up an running. Don;t be intimidated by the size of the book...a good portion of it is cookbook type stuff, which you can skip.

I second that. And not just because they're Australian!

Some very easy-to-get-your-teeth-into tutorial stuff, some good methodology and also some great strategies for broader web development issues.
Computer thez nohhh...

I looked at some of the reviews on amazon.com and it is pretty highly praised. They say there are a number of spelling mistakes in the code however, can any of you give a rough estimate of what these are? Are they obvious errors, like a spelling mistake, a missing semi-colon. Or the kind where they just write from memory and forget to write a crucial line? Are there any lists of corrections available online? I don't think any of these will really affect my buying decision, so this looks like what I'll be getting. Thanks again

Edit: Oh, and I forgot. I wanted to ask... This may be obvious, but does it address security issues and tell me how to secure the database? So someone doesn't register as deletedb() or something?

Yep, they've got a whole section on security, as well as some good code fragments for password checking, testing for upload poisoning, etc...

I didn't really notice the spelling errors as I never used their code verbatim - I'd just use it more as a guide in the right direction.

Happy reading

I tend not to buy books and look at webpages instead - They usually stay more up to date longer that books do

If all else fails you have my AIM name, I had lost yours in my HD crash a couple of days ago.
