OS X used to know my monitor (Sony 420 GS), and show it in the monitors pref pane but now it shows some Japanese(?) characters across the top of the pane and under color shows "Unknown Display"
I have not changed anything that I am aware of...
Help!

Where did you last see it?

If I had a signature, it would look something like this

Nope that did not work. It is still the same.
The only change that it made was to select the "show modes recommended by display" check box and I had to look at a lovely 800x600 60Hz display - yuck.

What if you boot from the OS X CD? Does the resolution improve?
I don't know if zapping the pram would help. Or a complete shutdown and reboot. Booting into 9 and then back to X.
I have the same monitor and it does do that in 9.2 now, but OS X (10.1.4) is fine. Odd but I'm in X full time.
There was a topic like this some months ago - take a stroll through the back pages here - someone did have some ideas. Also MacOSXhints is a good resource.
