Cover system = awesome.

Looks like the lighting is finally respectable too.

Lighting effects and shadows look way better, even on that crappy video.

Okay. I can't say lighting was something I paid much attention to in the series. Noticeable was the cars took a decent beating and kept going (One rolled, I believe).

I can see myself pulling the same Halo **** for my passengers only with greater success now. I'll be driving in reverse out of bad situations left and right.

We live in an amazing time, gentlemen.

I can't verify because I'm at work, but apparently this is a live stream of gameplay. How hilarious is that?

I can't wait to put up a "Be Back Soon" graphic on the Halo thread.

I haven't played it since Saturday, and I doubt I would except for the DoubleXP weekend.

Actually, I meant to put them up this week. As far as I'm concerned the NNGP is officially called.

Damn! And the Chocolate Dragons were holding back until the last race(s) to really show you fools how to drive.

I haven't played Halo in a while either. I got RSV2 now, so I'm going to be all up in that until GTA4. (but i'm always up for a Halo NN meetup if it happens to happen)

I can see this being a hard decision, although GTA can give you some street racing like mario kart but with some RPG's and machine guns.

It's trash talk like this that could jump-start the NNGP again!

BTW, how are you liking Vegas 2?

My friend just sent me a link to an IGN article on the multiplayer modes. I can't express how excited I am for this game. It would be a cool throw back if one of the multiplayer modes was called "Liberty City Survivor," like from the commercials in GTA. I doubt it though.

while watching this stream, he ran through the streets and broke out the window of an old cadillac looking car with his elbow then proceeded to jump in and drive away only to wreck into a gas station a few blocks down which then exploded in a ball of fire, as he exited the car and began to run, he was struck by a piece of debris which knocked him down onto the street where he was then run over by a large truck....
i am in awe.

Does anyone know if GTA4 will support 1080p on the PS3?
I was toying with the thought of buying a PS3 as a Bluray player for a while now, and if the PS3 offers better IQ than the Xbox 360 version I might as well use that as an additional excuse to get a PS3.

I've heard the PS3 version suffers from less of the purposeful blurring effects (Which are cranked up during Multi). No DLC though. Pick your poison.

This could be real.

Edit: I find the last paragraph suspicious and the sigs kinda look the same.

Edit 2: The numbers listed match Rockstar's official numbers on their site.

Edit 3: From a PC World dude's blog:
Update: This just in...beware false messengers bearing "official" statements about the game's release date. Stories are popping up (and thankfully, disappearing) that suggest Rockstar's okayed early sales of GTA IV. All of these are 100% false. According to Rockstar, "The official April 29th release date will not change." Why not, if some people are illicitly playing it early? Because -- Rockstar deserves a legitimate day-one sales number, which it forfeits if it changes the date this close to sell day.

Interesting notes:

You know what your gait looks like when you try and run down stairs quickly? They have that.

The guy drove over a corpse in the street -- causing the car to lurch quite badly. I wouldn't recommend doing this at a high speed.

When you get hit, blood splatters on your screen, momentarily impairing your vision.

IGNs Week long GTA IV whoring continues

Going out on the town can reveal new insight into some of the city's non-playable characters. On the ride to a joint, you might hear some offhanded comments about Niko or elements of the storyline. You might learn a bit more about your new friend. And this continues even after the single-player story is complete, as important characters open up to Niko and comment on the climactic events that conclude his adventures in Liberty City. These pieces of information are not crucial to missions and won't give you a leg up in the city. It's just great conversation. Think back to the conversations in Gears of War. Now imagine if the dialogue was actually interesting. That's kind of what GTA IV is like -- great action mixed with equally good conversation.

There's nothing quite like stumbling onto the street while your date shouts to the world how she's hanging out with a murderer. Drunk driving can be a challenge as the camera tilts and the controls stiffen. And if you pass a cop while drunk, you earn a one-star wanted rating. You want a challenge? Take Little Jacob drinking and then take him home on a motorcycle. Or better yet, take a helicopter when you decide to toss a few down. Drunk flying is far more interesting than drunk driving. Just don't be shocked when you accidentally crash your chopper into the Algonquin Bridge and kill your date.

More stuff as I surf my way to the end of the workday...

Grand Theft Auto IV Updated Q&A - Weapons, Cover, and Combat

There are 15 weapons in total, and you can now pick up objects from the street, such as bricks, and throw them. There's a good amount included for all situations and playing styles.
And when an LCPD chopper has you cornered, seeing the rotors come off, the tail snap off, and the [chopper itself] fall to the ground in a massive explosion is pretty cool too--with the particle effects, it's all really cinematic.
The RPG projectiles are initially fired in a straight line, but they can ricochet and deviate from glancing collisions. The spiraling of the smoke trail is done in the visual effects system. We have a lot of power and flexibility in controlling the position and behavior of all particles, so we can give the trail a nice curling behavior while also adding gravity and in-game wind forces to each particle.

The targeting system has been given an overhaul and we are pretty confident it will cater to every style of gamer. You can now lock on, and while locked on, target any part of the body by moving the reticle. Using the full range of the lock-on button really gives players the flexibility of using both to free-aim and lock on at any point, so whether you want to frantically lock on and shoot an enemy who is bearing down on you with a shotgun, or carefully free aim and shoot the petrol tank of a car, it's all done easily through the same system. We've also put in a "perfect shot" system--by squeezing the trigger button slightly when you first lock on to a target you can watch the targeting reticle tighten up and your first shot will be more accurate. Brilliant for one-shot takedowns. If you don't want to use the locking system, you can solely use free aim as well. Unlike previous GTAs, you can use the targeting system to throw grenades and Molotov [cocktails] and make sure they reach their targets (providing they're in reach). The euphoria technology really brings the new targeting system to life.
Finally, some more pics.

The stair descending gait I mentioned above.

Some awesome looking damage to a cruiser.

A scene reminiscent of Halo.

Ka-Boom.

Assisted suicide.
