I liked this one a lot more then the first one too. Not that the first one was bad... this one was just better.

Huh, weird. I thought the first one was funnier.

I am highly amused by the Monarch, though.

It was a good episode, but I thought it ended abruptly. Thaddeus' flashback of his father's...

Overall, I guess the first episode an 8.5 and this one a 7.5.

Oh yeah. "I love mein job!"

It saddens me to actually say that I've been disappointed by this new season. Barely cracked a smile with these latest episodes - which makes me very sad as I've held VB as one of the best shows ever made. I really, really, really want to keep loving it...

Really?

It seems right in line with the second season to me... which I felt was slightly worse then the first, but still great.

I know what you mean, but I wonder if it's fair to say 'worse.' The first season was unlike any other show out there, and it was a great show. The second season wasn't unlike any other show, since we had come to know what to expect from VB, but it was still great. It's not VB's fault that the element of uniqueness was gone, but it's still hard to compare with that first season.

It's still like the best show, tho. seriously.

So, I'm not a fan of all these backstory episodes. Leave a little to the imagination, please.

I like them, but I agree, let's have some real-time episodes now.

I think they're trying to re-introduce most of the characters differently since it's been such a large gap since the last season.

It had me laughing several times. I enjoyed it.

Pathetic episode. I said after the first episode not to over-do these history episodes, and it took them all of two episodes to do it again -- and it wasn't even that great because even if the backstory was good, there was next to no laughs. Other than the S.P.H.I.N.X. thing, (which had more pop-culture references in a single scene than a Family Guy episode, and twice as artfully done) it was a snore-fest.

Seriously, I thought backstory was shown because it was needed or funny. This was neither. And it ruined the great urban legend they weaved in Victor. Echo. November. last season.
Ug.

I agree. It didn't make me cringe.... but was almost completely without laughs. I liked seeing just what the hell was up with Quizboy and Mr. White, but their tale was not very funny.

The G.I. JOE spoof was the best part by far, and I had already seen it in the preview.

Well, flashbacks to the past have always been an important part of the show... so I don't think they need to get rid of the flashbacks altogether... but they really need to get back to some good old Venture family action. We're three episodes in and we have yet to see much of Brock, or the twins, or Doctor Orpheus.

I have a feeling that we'll see a series of episodes that gets the Monarch back as Dr. Ventures arch enemy, so we do have that to look forward to.

They also haven't added any real new characters yet. Enough with the explanations of the old ones.... we want some cool new ones. Wacky characters are one of the key draws of the show.

I know us Venture-heads expected the new season to have us in stitches already, and the long-ass wait certainly didn't help things, but we must remain confident that it's former glory will return!

Edit: From Jackson Publick's blog about last-night's episode.

For the record, I wouldn't have aired this one third in an ideal world, but production deadlines forced our invisible hand. While I'm quite proud of the episode, I worry that throwing another secondary character/flashback-heavy episode at you guys so soon after our Monarch-centric premiere could be a bit confusing--or, worse yet, kind of disappointing--and the episode mightn't get judged fairly on its own merits. But whatever...hopefully you're all into it. And if you're not, there's always next week's episode, "Home Is Where The Hate Is," which is a super-hot Doc & Jackson joint script (and, for no particular reason, probably the most beautifully animated episode of The Venture Bros. ever) and would have aired third if not for the fact that we're still mixing it!

Nice insight. I did think this seemed uncharacteristically dumb.

If they're still mixing episode 4, I wonder what that means about the other ones? Are they going to split up the season?

BTW sek, as cool as The Nozzle gag was, it reeked of the "Ignore me!" one from last season.

What made the scene for me was when Col. Hunter said he had no idea what the hell it was.

"Just a standard, uhhh..."

I get what you're saying though, very similar jokes.

Sadly, that part reminded me of the of Victor. Echo. November.

"Billy how did you get that hand?"

"That's a good question.
I have no idea."

Exactly. The mystique of the urban legends should have been preserved for at least another season.

I really hope this isn't a case of Jackson Public giving in to a few curious fans.

Edit: The episode also went into overkill mode once it started mentioning Sorayama and Sheila. And Doc Venture's appearance seemed to be for the mere purpose of keeping the show namesake from being AWOL.

Sorry, Jackson. The problems are worse than a premature release.

Agreed, mentioning Sorayama and having Dr. G in Phantom Limb's office was total overkill.

I still laughed at the Guild of Collegic Investors line by Limb, though.

I had to rewatch that episode as soon as I mentioned it here. Thank god I keep it on my iPod.

So Erik, were you anywhere near as pessimistic about the last episode as some of us?

Yeah, it was weird having Brock go right out from under Hunter to the Venture family.

I thought he was supposed to be this big legend? How would that happen if he never even worked alone?

That was a lame retcon.

From tv.com
Jackson Publick had originally planned to air this episode as the penultimate episode of season 2, before "Showdown at Cremation Creek" was expanded to a two-parter. The episode was then bumped to Season 3.
That would have been even worse.

Same here, I knew Sgt. Hatred was creepy, but man....he's creepy.

The back and forth between Hatred and Dr. Venture was classic, Brock watching a PBS special about a giant crossbow (which I've seen) "I wanna see them fire this thing, it's HUGE!"

Not hilarious by comparison to the best of the previous season but back on track nonetheless.

C'mon Dakar, elighten us with your opinion.

I personally hope they have a Jonas Venture Jr. episode soon - we haven't seen much of him so far this season, and episodes involving the other Venture brother are always quite good IMO.

Pretty good episode last night. Loved Dr. Girlfriend's crazy outfit. Hated the obvious/predictable ending to the episode.
