is there a way of burning avi movies to dvd or at least to be able to watch it on a stand alone dvd player

Yes. However, make sure the resolution of the AVI file is at least 640 pixel in height or it will look bad on TV.
Get ff mpegX, it can handle your task.
It will take time to convert the AVI file to MPEG-2 and make sure you have plenty of RAM and a fast CPU.
It ends up two files... one for the video and one for the audio.
Then use Toast 6 (in my case) to burn them.

i found a program on macupdate that would convert avi to mov, i think its aviray, despite the bad reviews it worked for me
