Someone briefly posted this already but it's worth emphasising. All/most of the publicly owned galleries & museums in London are free (The Tate Modern, British Museum, Science Museum etc.) Don't spend your whole time in museums (unless that's 'your thing' or it's raining) but try to visit the Tate Modern gallery for an hour or so.

Spend time walking around and finding things for yourself rather that being stuck in tourist hotspots all the time (especially if you're only here for a day or two). Go to some of the parks, walk along the river, definitely go to some of the non-chain-owned pubs (especially in the evenings), experience the night-life (try out Soho).

In London, the best way to get around is the by the Underground (known as 'the Tube' (same as the Metro in other cities) and you can always hop on a bus for shorter journeys. If you're planning to use the Tube & buses more than once or twice in a day you can buy a Day Travelcard which will work out cheaper.

Think about how you're going to get from the airport to where you're staying (a taxi may not be the best option) and how you're getting between cities (you can get cheap flights with the 'budget' airlines or the EuroStar train between London & Paris)

We were planning on taking the EuroStar to Paris and the underground around London. What is the "Eye" people keep mentioning?

I do the Paris/London trip about once every two weeks and the Eurostar is absolutely the best way to travel. When you consider the time it takes to get out to Gatwick or Heathrow and back in from Charles de Gaulle, the Eurostatr is actually faster. It costs slightly more even considering the cost of transport on each end.

Besides, where else do you get the experience of eating a nice meal with some fine French wine as you blast through the countryside at 300km/h +. Bear in mind that the cars on the highway are doing 130km/h when you scream past them like they are standing still. Always makes me smile! On that note, check the prices for first class. Sometimes it's only a little extra and you get a meal and some extra space.

That depends where you are.
And the nice trains (like the ICE in Germany, TGV in France) cost quite some money...
