Cable Modem - Which one?

I have Comcast cable and have been using their RCA modem. I'm thinking about getting my own cable modem instead of leasing theirs. I have a Linksys WRT54G router so I don't really care about Mac/PC compatablility, but am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I am looking at the Linksys cable modem just because it will look the same and stack nicely, but since I keep both the router and modem in the basement this is not a really big concern. I am most concerned about reliability and durability (I don't want to buy a new one every year or so)
Any suggestions?

I've only ever heard of 3 types of cable modem:
*RCA
*motorola
*Linksys
Didn't think there were others, if so.. wow.. lol. Make sure it supports docsis 2.0 or whatever that is..

Netgear used to sell a cable modem + 4 port switch + wireless + router. Don't know if they still do or not.

I am not a fan of Netgear At all. Bad experience with a WiFi router that could not handle Bittorrent without dieing (Wireless, or wired).
I have a Motorola Surfboard motem though, its rented from the ISP, works great, and has since I got it about 2-3 years ago... not sure how long now, long time though.
Always have issues with the ISP, or the Router, never my modem.

I have a Linksys 4 port router and the Motorola surfboard and did a considerable amount of research beforehand. You may pay an extra $10, but I NEVER have issues with it.
Now if only Comcast was as good as the cable modem...

Yes, don't fret spending more money on something. Going for the cheapest in routers and modems is sadly, not a good idea <cough>netgear</cough>

Experiences vary - I like my Netgear. And on topic, I have been very happy with my Surfboard.

I don't think anyone is saying you can't get good stuff from Netgear... but they have a history of having real issues from time to time.

Well, I got the Motorola Surfboard 5100.. Called comcast and within 5 minutes they had registered the new MAC address and I'm up and running... 4.1 Mbps down and 380 up. Thanks for the advice!

The Toshiba modem I had been using since 2002 was the PCX1100U. About 2 weeks ago, the cable LED was dropping a lot. Time Warner level 3 tech support determined my cable modem was spitting out an alarming amount of corrupted packets. So the Time Warner tech comes out and replaces the PCX1100 with an older model PCX1000. Go figure.

I just signed up Comcast almost 2 weeks ago. The modem is okay and no problem at all. It's a RCA DCM315 and costed me $3/per month for the lease.
I hooked it up to the AirPort Express earlier. Today, I bought the Belkin Wireless DSL/Cable Gateway Router (F5D7230-4) at BestBuy for $9.99 after a whooping $60 mail-in rebate. I have 3 non-AP Macs and PC need to take care of.

Has both wired & wireless connections.....DOCSIS 2.0 compliant.....6mb/s down, and 768 up!
previously had a Toshiba PCX1100.....it lasted 4.5 yrs, then got fried in an electrical storm........not pretty

Personally I find it hilarious that you have the hots for my gramma. Especially seeins how she is 3x your age, and makes your Brittney-Spears-wannabe 30-something wife look like a rag doll who went thru WWIII with a burning stick of dynamite up her a** :)
